We could all try the old twitter game - you follow me - I'll follow you ... May not increase posts but it will increase membership ...

I think you only get a short term return on those type of follow for follow things. IMO the best thing you can do is grow your forums community organically through multiple funnels, and having a unique idea.

We could all try the old twitter game - you follow me - I'll follow you ... May not increase posts but it will increase membership ... All you do is end up with a pile of inactive accounts and it's a disservice to you and your community. If I see that a forum has 200 members and 100 posts, I can tell that no one is active and I'd have no incentive to join the community. If the members to posts ratio is poor, or if someone hides their info center to hide statistics, that raises red flags.

It's all in the content. For example if you're a sports nut like what i am you'd get away with making it about the sport you love the most. But then again you might just get nowhere and get a lot of pests. But it is a way to get specific members. We have NRL people and I'd like some AFL. Also soccer. It may be a way to get them even if they only post weekly.

I've had my forum on Pro Boards for nearly 15 years now. The key to it being a success is starting with a base of members. Don't start one on your own because you're starting from nothing and that is so much harder. I already had a group of friends when I set mine up through other providers like the old Forumer and further back Yahoo Groups. The best forums are the ones that are loose (so to speak) where everyone can speak their mind - provided of course rules are not broken whether they be your own or that of Pro Boards. And once you kick someone out - never ever let them back in. I have regular posters and some who drop by occasionally. But because it is suiting me so well, I call it a success.
Success is in the eyes of the beholder though. Be firm but fair when things get a little antsy. Don't go overboard. That poisons the forum in the eyes of others and that reputation will end up following one around if one persists.
