What Is a Re-index?

I've seen requests for a re-index on this board & have read the threads on that topic but I haven't come across an explanation as to what exactly that is. It apparently addresses some sort of forum malfunction.

What is a re-index, what sort of problem is it requested for & what happens behind the scenes to correct it?

I'm asking so that if the problem occurs in my forum, I know the fix to ask for.

Hi

To make searches quicker and more efficient, posts and members are indexed. On some occasions, some of these indexes may stall or stop updating correctly, and so will need rerunning to ensure all posts and members are included.

If you ever notice searches not returning expected results, then a reindex should fix it.
