If it has the greatest design in the universe, but doesn't have 1 single active member. Then I'm put off in an instant.

I chose "other"
The very first thing I look for in a forum is Topic. If its not a topic that I am not remotley interested in I wont join it. It can be the bomb diggity of activenss, but if its soemtihng I have no interest in I wont bother...
then I look for overall apeal...as in if its organized and visually apealling.
then I look for activity. I check to see if they boards are regularly updated...I would rather be in a forum that has only a few people posting but do it daily then a big forum that is just dead...
these are the things I personally look for...

I look for good organisation and presentation but activeness is also important which is a pity.
The problem is it's a catch 22 situation. People wont join up if your members arent active and you cant get active members unless people join up. It's a nuisance for people just starting a forum (like me) as it hinders the whole process of setting up a community.
I have decided to create a niche proboard that rewards frequent posters with FREE dvd's so i think originality can help boost a forums appeal

If I had the time to really join other proboards, then I would look for organization, topic, and originality. If it's a topic I like, and there are a lot of other boards with the same topic, it has to have something different about it to make me want to join. Activity doesn't bother me much. Afterall, I spent 3 months on a board with about no activity.  |
