Me and a someone were having a debate, and I want to get this straight. Can plain HTML be copyrighted? (not javascript, php, perl, etc. Just plain HTML.)

If it's your work its automatically copyrighted to you. (unless that is just pure <b>text</b> HTML )

(not java, php, perl, etc. Just plain HTML.) why not, if it is something you spend time in, and it is something "new" or "difficult" to make, then you can do it you can take also a copyright at a template what is most of the time just normal html (with some images )

If you can prove that you were the first person to ever write the code, then yes, it would be copyrighted to you.

You can read the laws in your constitution.
Anything that work of one author (or more authors) is their rightful property. It's copyrighted to them, that noone can use that again, by only copying it. It is not patented however, so one can remake that. It's your PROPERTY once you make that. If someone takes that, it's stealing.

If I make a website in pure HTML.. It's my property. And the site is copyrighted to me.
The same goes for the content. If you wrote something, it's yours.

Say if I make a site with a program... Like dreamweaver or what ever that program is. Since the writing isn't completely by that person, can the HTML coding still be copyrighted?

If the code made by dreamweaver is the same, or very similer to something that's been done before, you can't copyright it.
You can only copyright something that's unique.

I don't believe you can technically copyright HTML code. You can copyright something you made in HTML. With HTML you're usually designing something. You can copyright the design you made or whatever, but not the <title> tags or the <b> tags and all of that in the code. For example, let's say we're talking about a PHP forum system. You're not copyrighting the PHP code, your copyrighting what you coded with it. Because anyone can go out and type up the same PHP code, plus PHP wasn't created by you
