mine are all people I know personally, People I've met in person in other words, people I know I can trust: my 3 brothers!
I would consider making a "faithful long standing" member whom, I'd never met in person a mod too, but I'd only give them limited Board Moderator powers not Global or Admin powers.

I either look at how they act on the message board, or act on other message board I am a member of. I am past the whole favour-your-best-friend thing (especially when he's that much of a n00b o.0 )

Back when I had a forum, I let my offline friend have staff powers. Afterwards, a guy threatened to hack my forum and one of my members took the thing responsibly. She lectured him good. Afterwards, he threatened again and she came with another speech. Since she seemed to have a sense of responsibility, I gave her moderator powers. So the point of the story is, as long as I either know the person in real life or if they're extremely responsible, chances are, I might make them a mod.

Mine are usually people I have known for at least a year and trust.
I get very uptight if I have a mod I dont really know.

I haven't had to pick any yet, but if I ever do, I'll choose people who have been on my site for a while and have made lots of good posts. I may also allow my members to nominate people, then vote on them.

I totally agree with you on that one. I had a friend who also had trolls invade on his forum, and one of the members stepped in and helped out, week later the helper was made a mod, and he's still the mod there today, and since that first round of trolls, no new trolls have been able to get a foothold on the boards. The global mod on that same site was picked, because he creates a lot of graphic and knoews how to edit the boards real good, so he's a mod so he can help with the creating and updating of the board.

It depends. When Im starting a forum, I often choose friends who have previous modding experience and I know I can trust them. Once the forum has begun, then I usually run a staff application system, which involves members applying to become staff (funnily enough ). I only consider their applications if they are an active and experienced member to the forum. I do not hand out global moderator positions to people who apply, moderator is the highest ranking position they can apply for. Occasionally, there is a really oustanding member who all the current staff (myself included), recognise for their potential, and Ill simply ask them if they want to become a moderator. Chaz

Asking them is always better then them asking you. That's how you eliminate the little power-hungy hitlers. o.0

people you know are best, whether online pals (I'm gonna make my Nightrider a mod soon) or long time friends (Chris-Demon, co-admin, friend of 6 years!).

They usually have to be a member on my board for at least 6 months or more. I don't really watch for post count or the amount of posts that they make. It's how they post when they do and how much I see them online wether they post or not. I think it's the over all impression of the member that matters. I've never had a mod that didn't do their job because of my selection process.

For my boards, mods have to go through a lot of hard work.
1. To even be considered, they have to be an active rule-following member for well over 6 months, not asking to be a mod at any time. This is to check and see how they post. Their chances increase if they report some violating posts to the current staff.
2. After that step, I ask the worthy member what other boards he has joined, and if he is staff at any. This check is to help me see if he would be a good mod or not.
3. After that step, he has to prepare a 50 word essay telling why he has to be a mod, a 5 sentence essay telling about themself, what forum he wishes to moderate, and a statement of intent that he will keep his account secure from crackers.
4. If they are lucky enough, the Mod rules are given to them, and they ave to agree to those rules.
5. If they agree, they are "Rookie Mods" with limited powers for at least 3 weeks. During that period of time, I see how good they do, whether they are violating the rules or not, or if they are even doing the job.
6. After that period of time, I see whether to keep them a rookie, upgrade them to a mod, or fire them.
*. If I know them in real life, their chances of being a mod are easier.
