Thanks, wildmaven I don't think enough people really understand what's involved when they get their cats declawed. I find it very unfortunate and rather saddening that people have it done to their animals that they love so much, without realizing (or even with realizing) what's happening to them. I can't stop people from making that kind of decision.. I just wish they were more educated on what a cruel action they're making. Especially when there are alternatives. We tried those... He kept chewing them off, so they did not work for our kitten. Yeah, I cross-posted this message on another board and someone there said the same thing. I'm definately going to try those, first.. if he doesn't adapt to them, I don't know what we're going to do. It's going to break my heart to have Puki declawed.. I just don't think furniture is worth it, personally =/

Miss Daisy, try spraying the furniture with something called "bitter apple" which cats are supposed to hate.
I'm not sure where exactly you'd find it, but I read quite a bit about it while reading a kitten website when we found our kitten a couple weeks ago.

Thanks, Mrs. Tenth I've actually got a bottle of it already because my little monster chews things more than he claws.. and took a liking to the wires to my video game consoles. He definately doesn't like it, so I'll give it a try on the furniture downstairs too. I used it with my Ferret too, and it seemed to work pretty well ^-^

We tried those claw covers and the bitter apple spray... Neither worked on our stubborn little kitten. We tried everything we could before having his claws removed. We cut it close to the max age to have it done because we wanted to try everything. Where'd you get it? I'd like to spray my hands and arms with it. Pet Suppply Stores carry it.

I completely agree with you that declawing is just wrong. Just thinking of it disturbs me. I can't believe that anyone would even consider it.

I can understand the need to spay/neuter an animal, as there are already too many dogs and cats without homes to begin with, but any other body manipulation, especially if it's just because you don't want your precious trinkets destroyed, is just wrong. You take on the responsibility of an animal, you should take on the whole animal, not just the parts you like.

Then why dogs have their tails docked or their ears clipped. My cats had their claws removed for reasons that had nothing to do with furniture.
And if having them put down instead of decalwed is a good option then I don't know what to say.

Tails docked and ears clipped are also wrong, in my opinion. In the past, things like that were done for reasons of hunting, but if your dog is simply a housepet, why do it? Cats wouldn't need to be put down instead of declawed if the owners knew about clawing instincts before they got the animal and then decided if it was something they could deal with or not. It's like having a child and saying, "you know...I don't like your crying...I'm going to remove your vocal cords so I don't have to deal with it." Dianne, I may have missed it, but why did your cats need to be declawed?

My cat I would really regret on declawing her, simply because when I am laying on my back she gets on my back, brings out her claws and kneads my back, and it o so feels good. She purrs, meows at me, I meow back her, she does it more. Its like my own personal massage therapist. XD edit: Though I would consider declawing my Rottweiler , he sits here and hits you as hard as he can, like if you have food in your hands, a cat, or even nothing, his claws hurt and leaves very long red marks, then usually puff up after a few minutes. that I would have no problem with, but a cat, well if it is necessary (medical reasons, or born with a claw defect. ) edit 2: here are some pics of my Rot. {hitting me while I was taking a picture } http://i185./x20/magedesigns/personall/09-15-08_2337.jpg {bagging and after I took the picture jumped on my, causing my toast to fall on the floor T_T} http://i185./x20/magedesigns/personall/09-15-08_2352.jpg Though I have to admit the second picture really looks cute.

Dianne, I may have missed it, but why did your cats need to be declawed? I was clawed and not even badly, got blood poisoning, got too close to my heart, it landed me in the hospital on liquid anti-biotics for a week. (yes I'm well aware that I could be clawed by their rear claws but the vet and I decided that this would be the best way to handle this problem. At the time my sister was pregnant and I worried about what could happen to a baby accidentally. I needed to make a choice and felt that this was the correct one. I could give a poop less for my furniture. I truly understand how vehement many people are about this, I just wanted to let you know that there are other sides to this issue. And many of us who still choose this option are not the small, horrible petty people that some think I am... not you guys but some others I've met along the way. PS - my cats are rescued because I can have the option to declaw them, and not declawed because I made a mistake in judgement. (I hope that made sense?)

We won't ever declaw our cats. They're indoor and outdoor cats, so if we did then they wouldn't be as protected as they are now with their claws.

Dianne, I may have missed it, but why did your cats need to be declawed? I forgot to mention that at the time I had the problem with the blood infection my immune system was compromised, so it became a more serious issue. I couldn't wouldn't give them up and this was the only way to keep them and continue to rescue them.
