Australia has always had boat people comming over the waters trying to gain entry. They are normally detained and sent back. However in recent days there was an explosion on one of the boats trying to gain access into australia. The people who had survived the explosion (3 died i think) had been flowen to Australian Hospitals and are getting treated. They are all going to live.
The quality of hospitals is questional at best, and chances are some would not have survived.
There are australian's who have waited months for hospitals to treat them, and also there are people who are still waiting. Some have died waiting. Our hospitals are paid for by our taxes.
My question is, Should they have been taken to hospitals in their own countries?

As any injury, it needed to be taken care of right away. Their right to be where they were when it happened is up to wherever they landed at. But to be taken care of? Of course it is the right thing to do

When they are well enough to travel they should be sent away.

I think they should be taken to the nearest hospital possible. If someone needs medical care, they should get medical care no matter where they are at the time or why they were there.

I think it depends how bad they're hurt. If well enough to travel I think they should be sent back to their own hospitals. If not they should be kept until they are.

A life threatening one needs to be taken care of right away. Moving the patient or delaying treatment may cause serious problems.

If you're visiting Mexico and get attacked by a shark at the beach, should an American citizen be flown back to America before being treated? No.

If someone needs urgent medical care, then you send them to the nearest hospital no matter where they came from, but I think that they should be sent back when they're healthy again or they could have just gained very sneaky entry

Oh jesus.
It's a question of human rights, man. They have a legal right to treatment at Australian hospitals. Sure, it might seem to you like they're playing the system. But the system was put in place to ensure the welfare of everyone within Australia's water space. It makes no sense whatsoever to send injured people away when hospitals are so close. Not to mention the Darwin and Adelaide burns units are some of the best in the world (testament to the handling of the 2002 Bali Bombings) what sort of treatment do you think they would receive in Pakistan and Afghanistan - in the condition they would be in by the time they arrive?

To be honest, I think they should have been flown to the Australian hospitals. If I were in the explosion, I'd rather be flown to the nearest hospital than put on a plane and told to get treatment back in England, a 24 hour flight away.

No. They should have a right to be sent to the nearest hospital for medical assistant. They aren't trying to cheat the system and don't mean to. They were in an unfortunate incident and should be treated where they are not flown back to where they came from.
