Wait...so using AdBlock Plus and not disabling it while browsing Proboards is a violation of the ToS?
For the record, the "you must be 13" has been enough of a rule that we made the decision to switch to Forumotion at my forum, as much as I love Proboards.

I record a few hours of telly to watch later. When the ad break comes up, I fast forward to the next part of the programme and avoid all the ads. Is this stealing ? I can see your position but I can't see it standing up to any legal challenge. I hate to butt in, but just to add..where is your evidence that the person even was blocking the ads? They could just remove the add-on, or whatever they're using. I don't mean to sound rude at all..but isn't just a waste of time to try and stop people from doing it? You could add as many blocks as you want for the ad-blockers, but someone, somehow, someway, will still figure out how to block them. I understand by all means the ads make you money, but going back to Salma's example; I'm watching TV, a commercial comes on. I go into the other room until the show is on again. Am I stealing? It's somewhat similar here. I see sites that have the "money per click" or however you say it. How many people can you tell me honestly click the ads? Or really even look at them for that matter? Again..sorry to sound like a douche..just debating this. =] I would think that fast forwarding is more akin to scrolling past an ad, not preventing it's display entirely (you still see the ads as you fast forward ) Wait...so using AdBlock Plus and not disabling it while browsing Proboards is a violation of the ToS? For the record, the "you must be 13" has been enough of a rule that we made the decision to switch to Forumotion at my forum, as much as I love Proboards. It is illegal to collect personal information about people under the age of 13 without proper consent from a parent. If Forumotion is a US based company, I'd say that does not sound good unless they are collecting the required forms from parents giving authorization under COPPA. Maybe they are not a US based company and therefore not subject to US law, maybe they are collecting the required consent, or just not collecting any personal info (e.g. email address), I don't know.

People could close their eyes when a commercial comes on, and mute the volume. Same concept when they open the site. Close their eyes and scroll.

Patrick, with version five relying heavily on JavaScript-driven interactivity why not implement some rudimentary preventative measures to keep people from using ad blocking software? I bring up V5's JavaScript reliance because it'll bring in that much more of an inconvenience should a user disable JavaScript to bypass any measures taken.
Verify the DOM after the page has rendered. If the advertisements do not exist shoot a flag back to the server. Perhaps automate a PM to the current user (should they be registered and logged in) on their first offense, informing them of the infraction or outright ban them. Otherwise just hide the contents of the page if the DOM verification fails.

We hope that people will respect that this service is offered for free because of the ads, and we make every effort to ensure that the ads run on our site are high quality. Patrick

This is..sort of related. Patrick, not too long ago there was a massive outbreak of ad issues (ads with sound, causing viruses, etc). So is this all taken care of, or is there still some risks of these harmful ads?

We had very strong words with our ad management company and they are extremely, extremely restrictive on what ad networks we run ads for.

I get about 100 of these per day from proboards in my security log Security Error: Content at googleads.g.doubleclick.net/ has been blocked from loading. Cross-Site Sccripting XSS site was attempting to run. Seems like it's good to keep it blocked.

That just means that DoubleClick (which is Google) is trying to send some data that your browser is blocking. Patrick

Quick question-
So if I have ad block plus installed (to prevent pop ups from another site I get onto and for any unseen threats on other websites. I have issues with blinking ads and bright colored ads), how should I go about disabling it from proboards? Because of how it is scripted, I can not simply disable it from all forums. I would assume this is more of something to ask on the creators' website, so I ask this...
At this moment in time, I'm disabling it from each forum I log onto... is this acceptable, or would I have to completely remove Adblock from my browser to be in compliance with the TOS? I realize at this moment in time you are not checking for Adblock programs, but I want to be in compliance.

In the rare event that one gets through, please press CTRL+ALT+R on your keyboard. This will pop up our Ad Reporting screen. You can send us in information about the ad and a screenshot so that we can have it promptly removed. Patrick

We had very strong words with our ad management company and they are extremely, extremely restrictive on what ad networks we run ads for. And what exactly will you do if the same thing happens in the future? Have strong words again? You're asking people to either: A. Put their PCs at risk of getting a virus (because believe me, I've heard the "it won't happen again" line SO many times that I don't even hear it, it ALWAYS happens again). B. Pay money to have the adverts removed and protect themselves. I already lost one laptop to a nasty virus I got off a banner that I didn't even click on, and in this economy I do not have the money to pay to make my site ad free (I'm having to live at home at the moment before anyone goes "but you can afford internet"). You're basically asking people to choose between a rock and a hard place.

As I said earlier in this thread, we will not fault people for taking the necessary steps they need to for protecting their computers.

And for those of us who have been hit by a virus from a banner before, ad blocking IS a necessary step to protect our computers.
