I hope this isn't against the rules or anything and I'm not trying to make a debate. But.. for those of you who know about this. What was the protest in Canada (I believe?) all about? And what is G-20 exactly? I am very confused by the whole thing. >_>

The vandals just wanted to destroy stuff. That had nothing to do with the G-20 Summit.

The g20 is a gathering of leaders from the 20 nations with the largest and most powerful economies around the world. They meet every year to discuss global trade and monetary ideas to try to keep the global economy on track.
People protest at anything with such a large gathering. The g20 and other economic summits tend to get more anarchic and violent protesters that like to make news in accomplishing nothing.

D: As Daniel said, the G20 meets to discuss the global economy so that people around the world can keep getting better off. The protesters don't want that to happen.

The G20 is a meeting of the worlds economic dictators to work out how to grow their own wealth and the wealth of their hugely rich financial backers whilst making cursory commitments to help those who really need it.
The protesters were protesting against these plutocrats and trying to raise awareness of their self-interested motives.

The protesters were protesting against these plutocrats and trying to raise awareness of their self-interested motives. Fristly, they're not economic dictators. Something like the economy cannot be dictated, at least not successfully. Secondly, who are these financial backers exactly? You're being far too cynical. And thirdly, while they might be acting in self-interest, you might have also pointed out that the current economic system we live in only allows one to gain through self interest by benefiting others. Those who protest against it would act in self interest to benefit themselves only.

From someone who was down town Toronto working with the police I can say that it shouldn't have been in Toronto. That being said it was there and we had to live with it.
As mentioned the purpose of the G20 is basically the top 20 nations (their leaders) meeting to discuss a variety of topics, mainly business. This always draws a lot of protests, the vast majority of which were peaceful. In fact I was on the subway in uniform patrolling the area and I had countless people come up and chat with me, wish me luck and thank me for protecting the city.
Then we had those who came to the city with the intention of disrupting the city. Setting police cars on fire does not help your cause. It is not a protest. Smashing the windows of business (especially small mom and pop businesses) again doesn't make your views stand out as important.
To attack the police and put weapons in your pocket to hurt the police if they search you is incredibly dangerous and extremely unfair position to put the police in. And yet the police are being seen as the media as the bad guys who used excessive force to control the city. The police were very restricted and have used way more force in other cities that it was held in.
All in all I think our police officers did a fantastic job and those who protested legally I also thank you. To those who caused damaged, I hope you find a lengthy jail sentence.

People protest at anything with such a large gathering. Yeah, when the G8 summit was in the UK, for instance, a group linked to Al Quaeda protested by attempting to blow up the London Underground and as many civilians as they could along with it. Still, fun times.
