And I was raised to respect the law. There's a difference between respecting the law and being willing to outright stab those you care about in the back. Respect the law by not violating it yourself. You'll live an awfully lonely life if you're willing to treat your friends and family like you treat any random stranger you meet on the sidewalk.

I'd rather help a friend throw a body into the river before I told anyone of their activities. It could also be beneficial considering who's more likely to kill you: someone who has committed an illegal act, trusted you, then you backstabbed them. Or the law abiding police who won't ever harm you and whos actions in protecting the innocent are constantly under scrutiny anyways. I think I'll take my chances with the people committing the illegal acts ;D Though I'm just slightly joking, but really, I wouldn't turn any of my friends or family in for illegal activities.

My main concern is whether it's hurting others. Other then that, I am against snitching as a policy.

Depends on the illegal activity and how reasonable said friend/family member is when confronted about it. Assuming they're guilty of anything to begin with. If we're talking drugs I'd try to convince them to get help as that would be more beneficial in the long run than getting thrown in the slammer. Something far more serious is a different matter obviously.
Getting the police involved would probably be a last resort if they're guilty and all attempts at reason has failed.

I'd confront the person/persons in question first. Talk things over. It's better to get information straight from the person(s) before taking any action as suspecition can lead to spectulation ending in a mess especially if you just jumped straight to the law. I know that people can lie, but if you're talking and asking questions while chatting you can usual catch something. But, yes, I would get the law involved if they didn't change their ways. Of course I'd still be their friend or family. I'd never turn my back on anyone.
In my opinion I think Phaelyn put it quite nicely.

And I was raised to respect the law. Even if the law is wrong? The trouble is, what is illegal covers a huge range of behaviour, a lot of which does no harm to anyone else and has no place being illegal, so if I've got no problem with whatever this person is doing I'm not going to report it.

Even if the law is wrong? What law is wrong? DUI, murder, illegal street racing? I'm assuming you have an opinion on whether gay marriage should be legal. Now, some states allow it and other don't. Do you believe both those contradictory laws to be right?
