So, I was in Target earlier today checking to see if they had the new Fallout game (yes, I'm always a bit late to the party ). What caught my eye instead, though, was Goldeneye for Wii. If any of you are like me, you must have played it on n64 for hours on end too, right? ...right? Anyway. So, instead of picking up Fallout, I decided to buy the Bond game instead. How could I not? Don't see re-dos of your favourite games everyday. Right behind the display for it, though, was an advertisement for Donkey Kong Country for Wii -- another one I used to play tons. I barely ever pre-order games, but I kind of had to get this one So, anyway. The whole point of this is a few questions -- have you noticed the re-dos of old games, as well? (I'm pretty sure I've seen a few more around, though I can't remember off the top of my head, though. Do you think these remakes are a good idea? Personally, I'm kind of excited about it. In the case of Goldeneye, I felt that so far, it's a pretty great game by itself, but manages to keep somewhat true to the original. Plus, for being a Wii game, it's got pretty good graphics. My only disappointment so far is that you can't exactly pull up the left end of a disc to make your enemies dance If DK Country can end up being as good a remake as this, I'll definitely be wanting moar 'new old games', haha.

1. Fail. >.> =P 2. It really depends, for me. I like some re-releases, but if it winds up going the way of capcom's "DmC: Devil May Cry" re-release of the original, no thanks. >.> I must say that I'm heartily enjoying the "Soul Silver" re-release of the Pokémon Silver game. xD

Nintendo has been doing quite a few remakes lately. Last years New Super Mario Brothers, and now Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country. I loved all of those games, so maybe I'll be seeing one of them around the holiday season.

I'm in no way a fan of re-releases. They signal a real lack of innovation, a major problem for games on Nintendo's platforms. It's sad that publishers are so dead-set on reaching into the past to try and reclaim an old game's "glory" to gobble-up those profits from the sentimental angle.

I don't know that game companies are trying to "recapture the glory" of any old game. I think its more of the fact that there's a much larger profit margin on a remake than a new game. All the developers, designers, and all have already been paid. All the copmany has to pay for, I assume, is something equal to re-compiling the game's code to run on other hardware and for the physical goods (CD's / Blu Rays).

I think its more likely to be because so many 90s gamers, at least from what I've seen around gaming forums, refuse to accept that any modern game can be good, but buy retro games or remade classics no matter what. Its an easy sale to that audience.

The only remake I have ever liked was Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver. But yes, I have seen some, and I usually don't buy them. I have too many new games I want to buy, plus I still own the games that I would buy remakes for

the new remake of "monkey island 1 and monkey island 2" are pretty cool ;D I was thinking this. I saw them on Steam and I was contemplating getting them but... I dunno, it would feel a bit sacrilegious, on the same level as, say, MAKING THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY 3D...

Phaelyn, the game you saw is called Donkey Kong Country Returns. It's not a remake, it's a brand new game they're making to breathe some life back into the DK series. I think the last few games were on Gamecube and involved drum peripherals. I hope Retro Studios did a good job on it so it can live up to its predecessors. Donkey Kong Country 2 is still the best one and it'll be pretty tough for them to top Rare's work, including the excellent soundtrack of said game. As for games that are being remade, I have to say Nintendo does an excellent job when they do remake them. Namely the Pokémon series. I was pretty satisfied with HeartGold and SoulSilver. Can't wait for the Ocarina of Time remake on the 3DS. I'm a sucker for remakes of old favorites.
