I am so sick of hearing that excuse. I have heard it so much. Parents use that as an excuse for their bad parenting.
Whenever I hear that I repeat back, "idiots will be idiots".

Well I don't apply that to parenting. It's just in the boys nature to goof off and be idiots. My dad is kind of that way with my uncle. My dad is mature when my uncle is not around but when my dad is with my uncle, they are always goofy.

Yeah, but when the kid vandalizes or beats up another kid, I get so sick of hearing that excuse for that kind of behavior.

My husband and I were at the zoo last month and some lady's kid kept screaming at the top of her lungs. She saw me shaking my head and she said, "she's a toddler, they do that" or something like that. She never once told her child to stop screaming, nor did she take her somewhere away from people. She expected us all to just put up with the ear-splitting wails of her kid just because she was a toddler. We passed at least 20 other toddlers that day, all who were very well-behaved and well-tended by their parents. Excuse much?

I was standing in line and the mother behind me had a kid that looked about 10. Well the kid was screaming and the mother was doing nothing. I ssshhhhh'ed the kid and the mother said "Well somebody is bent out of shape, ain't they?" I turned around and said "No, I just do not think I need a headache after I leave here". What was funny was the kid was quiet the whole time after I shhhh'ed him.

this is why i generally don't like other peoples' kids. plus the fact that if you say something --no matter how polite-- the parents look highly affronted that you would even suggest their precious little angel was less than gracing us with their presence.

Kids are noisy. They randomly scream, fight, get upset, laugh, whatever. It doesn't bother me.
And it's not a surprise that an embarrassed parent wold look for an excuse if some impatient shopper is confronting them. For all you know they've been out with the kid all day because they couldn't get a babysitter, they're all tired and hungry, and small children get upset really easily like that. Maybe its simpler to get the shopping finished as fast as they can and get the kid home, instead of having a screaming match in public.

Maybe its simpler to get the shopping finished as fast as they can and get the kid home, instead of having a screaming match in public. i think it's a bit of a difference in that regard, but my issue is generally with the people who think that their kids are just being absolutely preeeecious with no regard to anyone else. yeah, kids can randomly throw a fit, whatever, and I have a lot more sympathy for parents with babies, but when I see a three year old knocking stuff off counters and the parents just loling about it, yeah, i'm going to say something. Excuses, excuses. It is a parents job to keep their kids in line, no if's, and's, or but's about it. I echo Hero's sentiments -- how many kids do you have? I've had two, as well as helped raise my little sister. I agree that it's the parent's job to handle the situation, but there are just days where it's nigh impossible to keep them in line. All I ask is if it's one of those days, that the parents do damage control instead of look around and shrug helplessly.

I can understand those days when you just can't get the kid to quiet down (or am not able to, due to public decency ) but seriously? If the parent's just doing nothing while Little Johnny throws packs of gum at me 'cause he wants my hat, there's something wrong. Even worse is when the kid's screaming and the mom just leaves it in the cart Like I said -- I understand perfectly if it's just one of those days...just don't blame it one me.

. . . And 52 Year Olds will be 52 Year Olds.
I do my best to keep my niece well behaved, but even then, I know what to do when she starts up. I don't get why parents would be irresponsible, and just let their children do whatever they want.
