I think the subject should pretty much tell you what it is I'm looking for, but if you don't, I'm looking for either a Plug-In or Template Mod that would add in an automatic word counter (even for the Quick Reply box) that would display how many words you have typed up so far.
The admins I work alongside with currently use this code on our v4.5, and love it just as the members have liked it (and complained when we left it out one time). I've also gone through all 9 pages of requests and no one has requested this. So...if any one can help me out with this, I would love you forever! Thank you!

Someone gave me a plug in and a code for a word count box - unfortunatley it doesn't do it automatically on the area where you type but you can copy what you've typed and paste it into the word count box to get your word and character count that way. I'll link you to my forum so you can see what I mean. I currently have mine in a side bar box. glitterandlace.proboards.com/ If you think you'd be interested in it, I could link you to the topic that I started about it that gave me the one I refer to.

That would be useful if our forum had side tables, which it doesn't. It's why the automated word counter was perfect, because we didn't have to copy and paste into another text box. Thanks for that suggestion though; much appreciated, but it's not what I'm looking for, sadly.

No problem. Totally understand where you're coming from. In this case I would suggest you keep the request for a plug in for it and hope someone picks it up. To be honest I would prefer it automatically but the way I have it will do for now.

Aww, nothing yet? :- \ We were looking around for something like this too. We were using the Eton Bones Post/PM Word Count code before. Our staff team would appreciate it if anything could be created to this effect. :- )

I too would really appreciate a plugin for this! Not necessarily because my RPG has a word req., but because it's nice to know. Lots of people on RP forums are either under a minimum word requirement or are, in my case, just interested in knowing what their avg. word count is! Hope someone can swoop in and help out with this plugin! Or at least tell us how it can't be done, haha.

Im not sure if Chris is already working on a converted one. If he is, it would be better to just wait for his.

Word countFeatures:
- Count posts and PMs while typing
- Instantly switch between word and character mode
- Set default counting mode on plugin setup
- ignore counting the contents of certain tags (by default code tags and quotes tags are ignored)
- setup limits (e.g. "minimum 100 words") on a forum-wide, category, board or per thread basis (or any combination of the 4 limit classes)
- limit precedence ranging from forum-wide (weakest) to thread (strongest) with stronger beating out weaker in the event of a conflict.
- staff exempt from limits be default but can have this exemption revoked
- exempt certain members from limits
- exempt certain groups from limits
- admin exempt by default (test limit creations with a non-staff account or remove admin and staff from exemptions)
Give it a spin and see how many bugs you can count! Test in as many browsers as you can to weed out browser idiosyncrasies and test the limits you can set on threads, boards, categories and entire forum paying close attention to precedence (e.g. in the event of a category limit being in conflict with a thread limit the thread should win since it is more specific and therefore has a higher precedence). Test moving the count to a template editable location It should be obvious but to be safe the counter is placed at the bottom right just above the posting button. It can be configured by the user to switch between word and character mode. When a limit is being enforced it will appear on that counter so the user is aware. For consistency, limits use the same form validation system that Proboards uses to prevent the post from submitting

Chris: AWESOME PLUGIN! This is amazing--and it's awesome that you can set a requirement if you want to. I however don't use requirements, I just like to know how many words I've typed and so do my members. But this will be great for forums who DO use that! I have found one hiccup with the plugin--when I'm in the visual editor, it doesn't seem to count the words. In the BBC editor, it does. Is that an intentional thing or a bug?

I have found one hiccup with the plugin--when I'm in the visual editor, it doesn't seem to count the words. In the BBC editor, it does. Is that an intentional thing or a bug? I don't have the information needed to answer that question. If it is a bug related to browser then I would need to know the browser in question since I have not encountered that using any of the major browsers (did I test IE.. ). If it is a content related problem then I would need to know the content (a link to a demonstration of the problem). Generally, at the outset, those two piece of information are critical to problem resolution My first impulse is to assume you were perhaps by mere coincidence typing INSIDE a quote or code element while on visual (content access would quickly prove or disprove this) and wondering why the count remained unchanged and in that case I have enough data to give an answer.. Edit
I ran a quick test in the Google Chrome browser and noticed that it was stuck on zero or only counting content within elements (bold, italic, etc.) on visual tab and tracked it down to this line While this returned and counted text nodes in Firefox, if you are using Chrome then that might be a problem, change the "children" in that line to "contents". I'll make the change in the next plugin update. version 0.0.3 posted above
