Any official update on this? It's really inconvenient whenever our search is down. It's a bit embarrassing that we encourage members to search first before creating threads but they can't do that now so they have an excuse. I wonder why this support forum's search is functioning whereas ours is not? Are they on different "search servers?" I would really appreciate it if you can be more transparent about this issue. pinoykiwi.com I don't have an official update on this yet. I can tell you that it has been our sysadmins focus for the past few days exclusively. The reason we don't explain everything isn't for a lack of wanting to be transparent, more that the explanation is complicated and would go well over most users heads. Search for support is not run on the same server as general search. Support is specifically placed on its own private server, so that if someone wants to DDOS us (as occurred earlier today) Support will continue to run, and we can still easily communicate with users. Trust me, if we had some magical search fix just sitting around, we would put it into place for everyone! We like search being problematic just as much as you do (which is to say, not at all). Search is a big dense ball of complicated scripts running in parallel. It's like trying to remove a single brick from a wall, and then find another identical brick to fit in the EXACT same slot, except that brick needs to be denser, and support the load of the rest of the wall better while also matching the exact color and look of the rest of the wall. (That was a really poor metaphor, but I hope you understand what I'm driving at.)

Michael: We all appreciate the update. I can't imagine the work you guys have to do. I can finally pass this on to my board members as our site is pretty much worthless until search gets back up & running. You can always add the "sort by" feature again to my rolodex & the minions & myself included would be forever grateful!

You can always add the "sort by" feature again to my rolodex & the minions & myself included would be forever grateful! Unfortunately this feature might not be making a return for a while. Sort By utilized some code that just isn't compatible with the new v5 coding (as it is rather outdated). I'm sorry search is being such a bother! We're doing our best to have it running at 100% as soon as humanly possible.

Michael; you know you're my fave Pbadmin, but that being said.....it has been (sort of?) said that you guys' staff is not all that big and (of course) you always say things will be fixed ASAP, but this has been an issue for at least 2 months (as the multiple threads on it will show). I can't speak for everyone (obviously, duh) but my forum is based on care info for live animals, the likes of which there are literally only a handful of forums about IN THE ENTIRE WORLD (pet land hermit crabs, for those interested ) so having the ability to search for pertinent emergency info is paramount in establishing myself as the "best" forum for this info. Having this down is a BIG issue....not to mention some of the other issues with the "upgrade" that (do NOT) "help" us have a better forum.

Hi sachofscp, Getting search working is the sole focus of several of our team. Several improvements are made each day and a solution should be just around the corner. Thanks for your understanding!

Thank you Michael! Guessing from your statements, it's not just a server problem but design and programming as well. They might be restructuring how your search works. And while they are doing just that, it has to be down until they've finished. Am I right? Really looking forward to this fixed. Will bother you again in a couple of days.

To be super specific about it: There is a fundamental flaw in the most recent version of Perl that makes interacting with Sphinx extremely problematic. It's quite literally a programming language fail. Right now search is both up and down. Member search should be working everywhere, and regular thread search is up and running (unless it needs a reset) with the rough exception that the most recent 10% of posts have not yet been indexed (in the majority of cases). We will be increasing this number as we stress-test the new setup.

You're right Michael. Search is up but incomplete. Although I'm happy that we're getting a bit of progress. So you're using Perl and Sphinx. Thanks for that info!

Right now we're just working on the stability of search. While the results are not perfect 100% of the time we would prefer that search functioned correctly before we start messing with the indexing ability.
I know this is frustrating, but search is still being worked on by a team member (usually our sysadmin) daily (even on the weekends!).

We were already aware, as we are putting new things into place, you just managed to catch it.
I'm also locking all these ancient search threads, please create a new thread if there is a prolonged issue.
