since the forum already has a tagging system, why not make it more twitter-like with a hashtag? members can #hashtag certain forum topics and then the sidebar could have "trending" widget... when a user clicks on a #hashtag, the forum will display a screen with the posts containing that hashtag...
what do you think, possible?

I don't think this would be possible with a plugin. The hashtags would require AJAX to get all posts with the hastag. So yeah, as far as I know this isn't possible with a plugin. I would suggest it in the support board for a native feature.

You could put a link to the recent threads and recent posts pages, that's about it. This would also require AJAX.

Because it requires an Ajax call. Custom pages are just loaded the one time someone specifically goes to them. If it was a function easily used in the templates or plugins, someone could make it load EVERY page load

If it was a function easily used in the templates or plugins, someone could make it load EVERY page load so technically its really impossible to place a recent threads widget in the sidebar?

If your sidebar loads with every page, then it sends the additional request for data to the server. They don't want people to do that. If someone does one request, someone else says "what's the harm inTWO requests...?"
Then dominos fall

Have you considered that the V5 labeling system might be considered analogous to hashtags and if you click on a particular label it initiates a search that brings up topics that share that same label. The kicker is available labels are controlled by the admin and not arbitrarily user-defined thus avoiding those R-rated and nonsensical hashtags with a set that is appropriate to the forum's general topic of discussion (e.g a bikers forum would have different labels than a basket weaving forum) As for trending I suppose some kind of superkey attached to the forum rather than any account (when implemented) or some form of third-party remote storage could be used to track a set number of the most recently used.

Admin Panel > Structure > Boards and Categories > Double-Click a board. Near the bottom are labels.

Admin Panel > Structure > Boards and Categories > Double-Click a board. Near the bottom are labels. yeah but how does it function? i dont have the slightest idea... Go ahead and create a label, give it a name, permissions, and a colour. Then save your changes, and go back to your forum. Go to the board you just added the label to, open a thread in that board, open the actions menu, and hover over the labels option. Click the button to add your new label, then go back to the board. The label should appear near the thread title. Use the checkbox beside the thread to select it, and from the actions menu, hover over labels, and select the remove option for your label.
