A member who checks things out for me reports that when he is not logged into my test forum, the theme is the one I wanted him to see and critique. When he logs in the theme is a real beauty--a golf course in Portugal with the most gorgeous colors of autumn. Neither is the default theme.
When I was working with them I had much the same problem. One minute I would be tweaking the colors of one theme, the next I would find myself working on a different theme.
What do you make of this? Of course, what I mean is how do I keep them stable?

Okay, I see 4 themes on your test forum:
1. Autumn Beauty 2. Default (disabled) 3. Meat's meat 4. Nabilbb discus (default)
Currently you have Nabilbb discus set as your default, so that's the theme that guests will see. It sounds like your member has his account set to default to Autumn Beauty, so when he logs in, that's the theme he sees. If he wants a different theme, he can choose his personal theme from the edit section of his profile.
Without knowing what pages you were on, or the steps you were taking, there's no way for us to tell how you were managing to unknowingly switch between themes while editing them. If you can provide a way to reliably reproduce the problem, I'd be more than happy to look into solving it for you.

Hmmm. I don't see the reply I posted. I wonder where it went. Ok. another question. I didnt realize I could choose among themes in my profile. That is very cool. The problem is that my new theme (I imported one from the test forum) does not reflect all the normal changes I made on the real forum. For instance, I removed the shout box on all pages but the top page. But it is on all pages if you use the Discus (fish) theme. This is bad because I don't remember how I got rid of the shout box. I think I can tweak it to behave otherwise.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you made some changes to a theme on your real forum, imported a different theme from your test forum, and the changes from your first theme aren't present in your newly imported theme? If I have that right, then that's expected behavior.
To copy changes you made in one theme's template to another theme, you should use the import/export options from the Layout Templates page in your admin area.

Not exactly and I just created more problems for myself and asked about them in another thread. To stick to this one-- I imported the theme i created in test to my real forum. It needed some tweaking. I tweaked and made things worse most likely. I did stumble across the import/export option but I think it was too late.
I can always start over, I guess. At a certain point it would be a good strategy to do things in the right order...

One very useful thing to do when making modifications to your theme, especially if they are "drastic", is to export to your PC/Laptop every so often. I don't mean every time you make a change. What I do personally, is if I make changes one day, I will first export the theme to my PC and name it "THEME NAME", then I will make the new changes I want, and again export the new one, but this time add the date to the end "THEME NAME - DATE". Then if you do make a mess of things, you have a nice trail of themes to select from. The great thing too, is when you export the theme, it takes up virtually no space, unless you have lots and lots of images on it
