Notification Icons in Sidebar

I was told that there's no way to do it aside from some fairly complex template editing, and I was directed here.

I have a sidebar on my forum and one of the containers has links to different parts of the forum. The links lead to places like the private messages page and profile page. I want to have the notification icons that appear on the navigation bar when you receive a message or get quoted by someone to appear next to the appropriate links inside my sidebar.

This isn't complex etc at all. If I can do it, it isn't. Trust me on that lol.
Here's what I have for the 4 on my new theme (Admin, Profile, Bookmarks, and Messages).

You will want to change the style to suit your forum, but that's really all.
