Smart means that you won't get hit with a lot of emails if something's new, then new again before you actually read it on the forum. For example (for this, assume your Bookmark notification is set to Smart): You've got a thread bookmarked and you've got all the posts read. A new post is made in the bookmarked thread. You get an email but you don't visit the forum right away. Another new post in the bookmarked thread is made. You don't get another new email because you haven't read the last new post. It's still new, so you don't get email after email saying that there's a new post in the thread before you look at it.
Hope that made sense and helped.

From someone on the project, to confirm MSG's summary: The 'smart' option exists to provide what we consider to be the most useful interval of notifications for each type. In the general case, a notification that's set to smart will trigger immediately the first time, and then not trigger again until you've completed an action that shows that you have acknowledged that notification. For example, if you have bookmarks set to instant, every time someone replies to a bookmarked thread, you'd receive a notification about it. For popular threads, this can quickly clog up your inbox. When set to smart, you'll receive a notification the first time that bookmark is replied to, but then you will not receive any more notifications about that bookmark until you view the thread again. This way you only get notified once in between visits.

Thanks that was helpful. I still haven't gotten any daily emails so I just decided to change all the preferences to the Smart option. Hopefully this works and I will start receiving notification emails again.

I have been receiving this new type of email and just thought it was something I can't do anything about. I really like to have it done by each post update that I've bookmarked.
I've always had mine set for immediate notifications. I don't mind a ton of emails. (some threads I would like to comment on immediately. Others can wait. I will get to those soon. Especially now. My only other admin partner, and best online friend for years, just went through a series of serious heart surgeries. Last week was the big one. I was checking in, what seemed to be constantly, to hear any news. )
Honestly, I think if a person does not like to get tons of emails, this smart option is really cool.

Has the fix been rolled out yet? Because I'm still having the same problems with email notifications.

Still not receiving Daily Email notifications from threads I've participated in and the rest of the Smart notifications seem sporadic at best. I'll try switching those back to Instant to see if I get better results.

Ok now I'm getting updates for this Support Board even though my profile was set to never. I assumed that's because I signed up.

As you may have noted from the sticky, there was an e-mail issue that imposed some unexpected results from the notification system on users -- we're fairly certain we've got the issue taken care of at this time, however!

If notification emails are running normally then I'm still not receiving any and I know threads are being updated.

Based on your notification settings your last notification on the forum you linked should've been received around 3 hours before this post.

The forum I originally linked sorry for not making that clear. I'm getting the notifications now though so thanks.
