There's major talk of people saying that this just might be the last gen of console gaming meaning there wont be anymore consoles made by manufactures. I can totally believe it, the way smartphones are becoming so powerful there's talk of devices where you just plop that phone into your tv and play your game.
I'd be just fine with that then again I'm just fine with how this gen of gaming is, I'm fine with owning pc, ps4, and wii u as my main go to gaming devices. And I'm fine with my smartphone being my portable gaming device.
Cant find a reputable source but there are threads on other forums where alot of people are thinking this might be it for consoles.

I can imagine that one day that will be the future. Hard copies are rapidly becoming dinosaurs. It will be all on a cloud like thing.

There's always going to be the fan boy or fan girl who buys every game and every console that companies produce. I'm sure that Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and so on will figure out some excuse to produce another console for the fans to buy.

If a person buys all of the consoles that wouldnt make them a fanboy, a fanboy is a person who sticks with one company and that company alone.

I can see how that maybe, actually would be, possible in the future. but not sure of it's suitability, inasmuch as people use their phones whilst playing on their console ... do they really want their phone tied up? Also, one of the gripes i have been hearing about the consoles, specifically the xbox, is their increasing use as a media centre, so i'm thinking that people, for a while at least, still want a purely gaming system. @zar. I think internet connections need a lot of improvement first. my connection struggles to play a youtube video, can't imagine playing a computer game on it. Pay for a decent connection too, just i assume the infrastructure isn't up to it.

As long as the Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony fans are around, each company will have a group of people always buying their devices. I suppose if someone buys every console that exists, period, they would be a video game fan in general.

Well you have to take tablets into consideration also since tablets are over powered smartphones they could go that route also. I mean even now you can turn a tablet like the nvidia tablet into a full blown out gaming machine and stream pc games.

To be far to the console companies, it is not like they release a new console every 6 month/year purely to generate profits, a la Apple. The is usually quite a gap between releases. Was it 6? years between the ps3 and ps4? I think i had PS1 in 97. In 17 years we are still only on 4.

There is a huge debate that Consoles are inferior to PC gaming. NOT everyone has a decent computer. Someone was saying a 2005+ computer is able to play Minecraft. My old laptop couldn't play MC at all. 5Frames suck. It'd only play games like Peggle or plants vs zombies. This computer can only play MC because of Optifine. PS4 is already going the Cloud way. You buy the game, and it runs streaming on your internet. No download, no hard copies. I'd rather play on console. No lag, no issues. Not everyone can buy a top notch gaming computer. I can't even afford a PS4 or an X1. Which cost just as much as a computer from walmart is.

Thats wrong, the ps4 just installs the game from the game disc the only time the cloud is involved is when you buy a game from the marketplace and download it from their server then the data will be on your ps4 and you can play it offline. Not everyone can buy a lambo either but people do, A gaming company wouldnt care if you can or cant afford just as long as other people could.

Different games suited each of them. I never enjoyed playing for example, fifa, or burnout [ and other racing games ] on the pc. They were for sitting on the couch, relaxing - not sitting at a desk. I mean, its not as if pc gaming is new, and these games arent available on the pc, but the majority of people still prefer to buy them on a console. So although it can be done, doesn't necessarily mean it will be the future.

Oh?What does a renting service have to do with buying a ps4 game? Why would they up and stop printing hard copies? Where does Sony say that's going to be their main go to service?

Eventually (Like a few posts above) hard copies will be inferior. Cartridges are. Why wont Discs? With the Digital age coming and less people selling CD's for music. A lot of Artists are selling on iTunes and other services. I've seen many artists pull from Hard copies and go to Sound Cloud and iTunes.
Even Amazon sells digital copies.

I still see a massive amount of artist CDs in walmart. I don't think games on disc are going to go away at any point in this gen. Did cartridges ever go away during snes life span or n64s?
