So, again, you all know my daughter is turning one on Saturday. Of course, my family and I are having a part for her. Some people think it's pointless because she won't remember it. But, we'll all remember it and there will be photos and videos to keep the memories alive and we can show them to her when she's older.
What's your take on first birthdays and parties? Do you/would you have a party? Why or why not?

Oh, absolutely, I had a party for my DD's first birthday and for every thereafter.
Yes, the first is probably more for the parents than the child, but there's nothing wrong with that.
You're celebrating a life that has enriched you and your family.
Celebrate it well, Teg . It is a joyful time.

As long as you don't think it's pointless that's all that matters, you're the parent, no one else is. My aunt gave my younger cousin an all out first birthday party and continued to do so in the following years. It's not about the child remembering, it's about celebrating the first year of life and that this child was brought into yours. You're more than entitled to have an extravagant party.

I just cannot believe people thinking that way. I am an old man of 66 and when I was born and on my first birthday I don't think we even had a camera in 1950 to remember the event. In today's world we have digital cameras, video recorders and even mobile phones that can take photos and videos and save them on computers or whatnot. Myself and wife have loads of photos and videos of our children on their first birthday and we also have photos and videos from our son and daughter who have grown up and took photos and videos of their children and grandsons on their first birthday.
Last week we were looking after wee Kaiden (2+ gone) and we showed him a photograph album with photos of our son and daughter on their first birthday plus photos of him and his big brother Connor (9) and cousin Alexander (8) on their first birthday. We were saying to him and pointing at photos "Kaiden....Connor...Alexander....Mummy....Uncle Darren" etc. He just looked and pointed saying the names in baby talk, beautiful too see and hear. Me and Liz did exactly the same too our son and our son and daughter and they do exactly the same too wee Connor, Alexander and Kaiden. Memories that will never go away and will keep your brain healthy and active.
