Ah, the ol' Football Season thread. Splendid!
For my team, Brighton we started off with a credible 0-0 draw at Derby today. Considering we had one fit centre-back it's a good result against a team perennially in the play-off positions.
For the season...well, missing out on promotion to the Premier League by 1 goal last season was gut wrenching, but we've had an alright pre-season. Missed out on one key signing (screw you, Norwich) and we are probably 2 players short of where we want to be, but keeping our best players (Knockaert, Stephens, Kayal, Dunk) will be equally as hard as signing new players. I'd expect play-offs this season but with the Albion, it's never straightforward.

Not expecting much this season but a steady build on the past two seasons. Will be happy with a 6 - 10 position. There's a lot of money flying around this league now, with many clubs hoping to hit the jackpot and get promoted, and many fans want their team to match that, but it is not sustainable, and there are only 3 teams that can get promoted, so i am happy that Ipswich are not going out and paying high transfer fees which can not be supported by revenues coming in. One just has to look at Derby, and the past three seasons where they have spent a lot of money, and held as an example of what we should be doing when they top the league in January, only for them to ultimately fail to get promoted. Over those seasons, ipswich have finished either just behind, or just in front of derby, with a vast difference in money spent, so whilst spending a lot of money can help you get promoted, it is no guarantee, and i think i prefer our method, or perhaps i am just being cynical about the crazy amount of money flowing into and out of the game these days With that said, we have made a couple of, on the face of it, decent signings this summer, for a bit of money. One of those a defender from Portsmouth - Adam Webster - who is highly regarded as for the future, and cost £750k, and Grant Ward, a winger/right midfielder, signed from Tottenham for £500,000, who scored a hat-trick today on debut, so hopefully they will pay off. The key for us this season will be keeping McGoldrick and Bishop fit. They are our best two footballers over the past two years, but have suffered with injuries. If they can stay fit, we could be pushing for a play-off spot. I still think Newcastle will get promoted, and grudgingly Norwich too. Their teams are just too strong for this league, and whilst Newcastle had a poor display last night, after 10 games, i think they will have settled in to the league and will starting running away with it. Think Brighton will be up there challenging them all the way, and expect Derby to mount a challenge too, as usual, but ultimately drop off the pace and sack their manager! Other than that, i think it will be a normal Championship, where all the positions are up or grabs. Talking about the game last night. The commentators were making me laugh. For twenty minutes they were essentially replacing Smith with all and sundry, whilst waxing lyrical [ well, almost ] about newcastle's forwards, and the players fulham lost, then he popped up and scored the winning goal. I am not saying that players shouldn't be criticised, but christ sake, give him a chance.

Graham yous absolutely should have gone up last season, I think you'd have even done quite well in the Prem with a good few additions. Apparently we were in for Knockaert but got rejected. I wonder if we'll take it further because we don't have a solid starter in that position who can guarantee goals and assists. He looked like one of the best wingers in the Championship last year, if not the best. Definitely think Brighton will be competing very realistically for promotion once again and looking forward to playing yous. You knocked us out of the cup twice in a row when we were in the EPL so it will be an interesting fixture. Craig I think you're bang on with the attitude and philosophy clubs should live by in these insane times. No need for clubs to go daft and make marquee signings (which usually don't pay off) just to try and compete when sustainability and realism are the real drivers behind a club's long term success. Ward looked class today, hopefully he puts in shifts like that regularly. You're right about the commentators. Didn't hear the end of it about McCoarmack leaving and questioning whether Fulham would be able to balance off their poor defending, then the big man goes and gets a goal like that. We could do with someone as big as Smith to be honest. We've got Mitrovic with his physicality so hopefully once he returns from suspension he can shore up the attack, because Gayle is never going to be doing what a player like Smith does. The players who looked dire for us last night were, funnily enough, all ones we brought down from the Premier League. All our debutants looked decent, especially Hayden. I reckon once Diame gets into the flow of things we should be able to connect the midfield to the final third a bit better and start scoring some goals. Definitely in for an interesting ride. Community Shield tomorrow as well!

Talk about inflated prices for players this season, Pogba for almost 90 million pounds, and John Stones for 42. That's crazy money. Honestly, I don't think Pogba is worth that much at all but I'm excited to see him in the league trying to prove himself. If anything, the Manchester derby this season looks a lot more exciting and threatening than previous years where you expected City to win it and United would somehow put up a show.

Yeah the whole transfer prices are getting ridiculous. My 17-year-old brother sees it as normal because of his age, but I still remember when £15mn was a record-breaking fee for the best players in the world. Now we're paying almost that for Championship quality players. I keep having to be reminded that £25mn for a slightly above average English player is actually normal these days and not a rip off. On the other hand, it's meant we've been able to offload players for inflated prices. Hopefully we can get rid of Sissoko for £35mn, which would be over £30mn profit.

Lol, a good old Football, or to our American members Soccer thread, well here goes.
I am a Glasgow Rangers supporter here in Scotland and I am also a Manchester United supporter and have been supporting both for years. I don't go to many matches nowadays due to my health but I will always say "Family life comes first, football comes second." I don't believe in the saying "Football (club) comes first and wife and kids second" and you do get a lot of people, especially guys, who think that way.
As someone mentioned the transfer market is crazy nowadays, my United paying near on £90 million for Pogba made me slap my face in disbelief but that's football nowadays. These professional footballers today become millionaires before they reach 30 years old with flash cars as add on's in their contracts all aided by an agent who makes million's also, footballers nowadays cannot think for themselves and let agents do the thinking for them.
Other than all that above (a bit of a rant from an old man like me) I am looking forward to the season ahead with good healthy banter in this thread.

If you mean Mike Ashley D then I am afraid to say he is not Scottish but born in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England, he has shares in my Glasgow Rangers, though. To be honest buddy I am not a fan of Ashley as all he is is a billionaire business owner and Newcastle United would be better off getting rid of him, Newcastle should be up there in the EPL winning titles and cups and whatnot as you fans are very passionate and you're ground St. James Park is always packed out with passionate Geordie fans, or better known as the 'Toon Army' and have a seating capacity of 50,405, I hope you're Newcastle bounce back up from the Championship back in the EPL where they belong.....then get rid of Ashley lol. Anyway, this a football thread so let's keep it at that and not make it football politics if you could call it that, I look forward to the football banter in here.

Ahh, you are a Seagulls man, I like B&HA as United have loaned a few players to the Gulls over the years and one in particular, was James Wilson. I did like that lad and wondered why he was sent out on loan when playing for United U21's then a few senior appearances and I had high hopes for him. It looked like he never hit it off with B&HA and is back with United but I think he will be shipped out again and be sold.

I meant we share a common owner, I wouldn't dare try to offload him on some other nation Ashley has his ups and downs here, presently he's having an "up". He's had quite a lengthy learning curve because previously he tried to control the other managers through the corporate element of the club (particularly on training and transfers). He seems to have seen the light this season giving over control of most things to Rafa and (barring the weekend's result) it seems to be working well so far. It could be a lot worse with the position some former Premier League clubs have ended up in after financial bother, so we've got to be grateful that there's someone with money who is willing to invest backing us. Football politics is absolutely welcome in this thread. It's a core element of the modern game and besides, we need something to moan about when everyone gets sick of us moaning about our poor performances week in week out.

Wilson was a peculiar one - he's got undoubted talent and he showed that on occasions with some superb goals for us v Charlton and Derby off the top of my head, but there's a massive question mark over his health/fitness - we think he spent most of the 2nd half of the season with an illness, as he was ill on the side of the pitch on more than one occasion and often was huffing and puffing early in the game/his appearance which left a lot of fans a little perplexed. He never seemed to quite live up to the potential, but if the deal was right and his fitness wasn't an issue i'd take him back, there's a quality player in there.

I thought you would've been a Hibee, John. Err no thanks, I live in Leith and their ground Easter Road is right behind us and my son being a Jambo supporter, sometimes when he visits he will have his Jambo top on. Hearts and Hibernian are bitter rivals and that would be like me putting a Rangers top on and walk into a Glasgow Celtic area pub.....deadly lol. Saying that our daughters hubby is a Hibee man and we get on ok. The funny thing is my wife's big sis is a Celtic supporter and her hubby is a Rangers man.
