I can't explain it. It's not logical. That's why it's love.

Hi. New to ProBoards just came over from TapaTalk who makes EVERYTHING way too difficult...How do I make a private chat room on my board for members only, like we used to have on YuKu? Yes I have a shoutbox for quick hellos, but my members want an actual room back to 'meet' once a month and discus the latest happenings & such. I understand I need to create a new page and insert it into the wrapper. Please, I need a step by step tutorial here
Thanking you in advance

Hello, I'm not an expert but I suspect what you could do wouldn't need to require any additional coding. Just careful use of the normal administrative functions. This thread is likely to be moved. Through use of Admin > Structure > Categories and Boards:You could make a new category and board or boards beneath that category. Then set the permissions to whatever suits you. If you want only members to be able to view and access, then they would be able to see those boards and participate in those conversations. Non-members wouldn't even know they exist. Or you could set the permissions for staff only, or just certain groups. This new board(s) could function like your other boards where you can have different threads for different topics. Or you could the permissions so only the admin can make new threads. Does any of this sound like it fits your needs? It's usually a good idea to start with the help guide. Then ask questions if necessary. You'll probably still need to make threads to get help but you'll have a pretty good start if you use the guide. In this case: support.proboards.com/thread/460242/creating-managing-categories-boards would tell you most of what you'll need to know. Disclaimer: If any of the regulars on the support board suggest otherwise, take their advice, not mine.

Unfortunately, if you are not satisfied with the shoutbox, ProBoards does not have a built-in chatroom function and you would need to use a third-party service. ProBoards used to be partnered with Addon Chat but no longer provides this by default, and it looks like it is a paid service. I make specific mention of Addon Chat since I've used it myself and enjoyed the service when I did (when it was integrated into PB). There are other chatroom softwares out there, but I don't think you'll find one for free. Once you have your custom page for the chatroom + the chatroom coding, we can assist further, but we can't provide a code for you.

Then go into your forum wrapper template (Admin> Themes> Layout Templates> Forum Wrapper) Find this near the bottom of the template: $[shoutbox] Highlight that text and *cut* Save your changes. Got to the 'edit page' for your custom page Got to the HTML tab. Paste $[shoutbox] Save changes. Done.

Check the opening post again: they don’t want to use the shout box for this, they want an actual chat ROOM, which is an entirely different function than the shout box. This effectively turns the shoutbox into a chatroom. No, it doesn’t. There are several key differences, such has being able to see which members are actively participating in the chat, the ability to post longer messages, the ability to add chat-specific moderators, a visible chat history exceeding 20 messages, and so on. Simply putting the shout box onto a custom page does not emulate the features of a genuine chat room. But regardless, the OP made it clear they wanted a chat room specifically and not the shout box (which is already in use “for quick hellos”).
