So my workplace is planning to do this random gift exchange game in a few weeks, kind of like that episode of The Office where the characters all buy/make each other stuff and then nobody ends up with the thing they want. I'm interested in participating, but the problem is, I have absolutely no idea what to bring. I want to bring a gift that's something a person might actually want, but also not something absurdly expensive. Ordinarily, I'm terribly uncreative at gift giving and if I want to buy a gift for someone, I typically just ask them what sort of thing they'd like to have and get them that. Unfortunately, that tactic doesn't really work when you have no idea who's going to end up with your gift. Any ideas/suggestions on how I could choose a gift for this sort of thing? I was thinking I could get a nice book (something in the $15-25 range on Amazon) and wrap that up, but I have no idea if that's the sort of gift a random person would want, or what other types of things I could consider instead.

Some may find this a bit tacky and/or lazy as a gift, but I love getting Gift Cards. And if it is to Amazon (the scourge of retailers everywhere!) even better. Split the difference of what you were planning on spending. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But I also love CheatAreZee's idea...you can't go wrong with Hickory Farms gift baskets.

Gift cards seem like a good idea. Just got to figure out what their favorite store or restaurant is and give them a gift card for it.
Also you could try chocolate, everyone likes chocolate. Can't expect much from a random gift exchange with co workers who may not know you well.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I'll choose something and order it this weekend, then hope it arrives in time for the event.

I'm always in favor of Hickory Farms. What type of gift exchange? Are you supposed to put thought into it or is it one of those White Elephant joke parties? That would determine my answer.
