Want to learn to code?It seems as though one of the latest trends is to learn how to code. But many people don't have a clue where they should start. I hope this helps answer some of your questions and get you on your way. Where to start? Before you even think about being able to make your own scripts, you need to learn the basics. So what are the basics? Well many people find HTML or XHTML an ideal place to start. These are markup languages used in the creation of web pages. Another language which you will need to understand the basics of is Cascading Style Sheets, commonly referred to as CSS. CSS is used with markup languages like HTML to change the way the document looks. You should be able to pick up the basics of these fairly quickly. Although having said that, getting more in-depth knowledge at this early stage can be helpful if you choose to continue with learning to code. So What Next?So you've now mastered the basics and are completely happy with your knowledge? It's no good moving on until you are. Next, you have a very daunting prospect, JavaScript. Javascript is the most common language used when creating codes or scripts for ProBoards. So if that is what you want to do, then this is the language for you. I'd recommend getting the hang of the basics of javascript first before looking into the specific style of how to create codes for your forum. However even if you don't want to code specifically for proboards and have bigger plans, I'd still strongly advise that you develop a good understanding of the language. It can be a very good introduction to other languages. Speaking from experience here, knowing javascript made learning PHP a lot easier. One of the great things about Javascript, is that you can choose to learn as much or as little as you want. Needless to say, the more you learn, the more useful it will be. I Want to Learn More ThoughStill not satisfied with what you've done so far? And you're still determined to go on? Congratulations, not many people make it this far. The next stage to conquer is the world of server-side coding, and this is where you get a big decision to make. There are a number of popular languages to choose from including PHP, ASP, Perl and Ruby. Which you choose is completely up to you. But look around before making a final decision, each have their own advantages and disadvantages. I hope this has helped to steer at least some of you in the right direction. There are many programming languages out there and many paths which you may take, so don't feel limited but the above route. That is just my own personal opinion. Your route may branch off and go in a completely different direction, or maybe just take a detour. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that you do what is right for you. - Ross Links to Learning Resources: Click Here
