Admin, because he can do more then a simple member... If you wish to join in the discussion, you will need to at least post something that actaully contributes to it. Please make sure that you post a minimum of 4 sentences so that your post is productive. Why do you feel it is necessary to be an admin, does it matter that they can do more? Whats wrong with being a simple member? Why does a member need to be simple? Please try toadd clarification when you post.Thank you.

I agree with Enchant, when choosing moderators for your site it can be very stressful when a long term member thats been on the site believes they should have made staff. Admins always have to deal with such problems and stresses all the time, resolving fights, new ideas, managing staff, general and (Boring!) maintenance is a part of near every day.
I started a site over two years ago with a close roleplay partner. We learnt all this over time, and now with it being so large at 800+ members I spend at least two hours a day working on the site with the staff there. I don't think many admins realise what they're getting into when they first start a site, (I sure didn't anyway XD). But if you're patient, determined and commited to making the place an enjoyable forum for your members to spend time and interact with each other I believe you're suitable to be an admin.
I think I enjoy both, being a member (its so much fun! You can do whatever you like as long as you follow the rules) and the admin, as although you have so much responsibility you gain a lot of happiness at seeing the place grow and seeing the members enjoy it. So although being an Admin is so much work, I think I would still be one, only for one site though *dies at the thought of running two sites* XD.
So its admin for me, but ONLY for one site ^.~

To be a good admin you have to be a good member, and especially in RP forums you have to have some experience before you start your own... I'm an admin at a few sites and I created another one yeserday. If you want your board to be succesful you have to be patient and willing to dedicate a lot of time on your site. Adding things everyday and working hard to make it better everyday. You also have to be nice to your members and help them with everything they need

I agree with what ♥charoulla♥ said, because by being a good member and having a good load of experience you can be a better admin. I love joining sites, and though sometimes I feel that I could do better than some of the people chosen for the staff, I still enjoy just having fun without all the responsibilities.
Admins are members with a lot more responsibility - and a lot more work. And since I think that I do well with responsibility and that I am responsible, I believe that I would be a good admin - but I don't find anything wrong with being a member either.

Wow, I really enjoyed the conversation here! I know I'll probably come off as slightly repetative on some stuff, but why waste a perfectly fine two cents?
In any case, I think a good member and a good admin at a base level are the same thing. Someone who is active, dedicated to the site, fun to know and some-what litterate. On the other hand, I think the line is mostly drawn with experience. The more experience you have on a board(especially rp boards, since this is where I speak from experience) the better the chances of you being a successful admin. First, this would mean you know what a comfortable atmospere should consist of, and hopefully realize the artist never views their work the same as the viewer and seek a second opinion. Second, this means they are likely to have a general idea of conduct. Knowing conduct provides a basis for the rules, an understanding of ones responsibilities, and very importantly some sort of standard for how an admin should act. I will admit the last one especially is not always true, but indeed most of the time it is.
Then, we get to technicalities. A suitable admin should be able to use the admin cp with atleast some level of knowledge, know what a code is(hopefully..) and most importantly of all know how to interact with members. Personality wise, I would say anyone is capable of being a good admin, but it requires developing patience, persistance, and an over-all sense of humble-ness. Any admin who holds themselves above other members will reflect this misjudgement in their conduct and quickily make it a very uncomfortable environment. All in all, I think it's important for an admin to be laid back, understanding, knowledgeable at-least in the topic of their board, and above all else fun. After-all, why would anyone want to be around someone or even be somewhere that isn't fun? Kind of eliminates the entire point in my opinion.

I think that both being an admin and being a member can be fun and are important jobs. However, I think being an admin requires a lot more dedication. To be a member you have to be active, and you have to post and all those things, but to be an admin you have to worry about general upkeep, advertising, and make sure all the members are following the rules and such.
Personally, I like to be an admin on one site, and then a member on a few. I tend to make new sites if I can't find one that's already made that I want to join. Otherwise I stick to being a member. And I know I'm probably like, the twentieth person to say this, but being an admin requires more experience than being a member.'
All in all I think both are fun and worth the time. You just need to balance them out.

I agree with a lot of you guys. To be a good admin, you have to have plenty of experience as a member. I remained a member of a single forum for over a year before I was upgraded to a moderator. Just being active and moderating a site will not necessarily make you a good admin, though. I tried various times before I finally found a theme, custom layout, etc. that I was comfortable with to start up a site. And even then, my first few tries were futile. I, at that time, did not have the dedication to push my site forward, which meant it was doomed to collapse.
When I finally got around to building a site with a nice layout and good idea, it seemed as if everything started to work out better. I'm definitely not saying that it was smooth sailing after I set everything up, but normal members were what kept me going. I know that sometimes it's better to be a member of a site. That's why I continue to join up with new sites and try my best to remain an active, friendly member. It's just that some people are better suited for an admin position; you have to be very agreeable with your members and work for the better good of your site. Sometimes people will not agree with all your decisions, but you need to know when things are necessary and when your site is more important than losing one or two members.

Well it depends. Sometimes people get promoted from a regular member to an admin. I don't think you should do this. You might not trust them. You should first start then off as a moderator to see how they do as that.

And starting them off as a mod would be a mod status, but in a group that only lets them be a mod of one or two boards.
I've noticed that a lot of members want to be an admin as soon as they join the forum. A newbie to forums will automatically think that they can jump up to being an admin and do a fantastic job at it, when really, that is completely wrong. Like said before, it takes experience. Watching other administrators work; doing small, then large moderation jobs; and giving it time. You can even start your own forum with a few friends to get some experience as well, but you can't come crying to us because you don't have enough experience to attract a lot of people.
Then there is the fact that some people are not cut out to be admins. I'm not trying to be mean in saying this, but it's the truth. Some people don't have the gift of leadership. Some people are either to nice, to easygoing, to something that makes them a bad admin and are not willing to change that while dealing with a forum. Those people would be better off as a member, and should choose to do so. It is better this way, anyway. The more people who decide to be members then the more admins that will have members with them
It's a cycle.

Those people would be better off as a member, and should choose to do so. It is better this way, anyway. The more people who decide to be members then the more admins that will have members with them It's a cycle. Members who join immediately and ask to be admins need to slow down. I have a co-admin on my site that I have roleplayed with and associated with online for nearly two years. It is only recently that I have promoted her to co-admin because I felt that she was a great member with wonderful ideas that would help my site. With that said, she started off as a global moderator on my board first, as well as a mini-mod on a different board. I had seen how she reacted to certain situations and felt that she was trustworthy enough to help me maintain my site. Along with this, I have a few normal members that I have as moderators as well. They were always the active, friendly members that pointed out simple mistakes kindly and helped the site run smoothly. These are the kind of people that make better admins. But, along with those mods, I also have had members who come in, ask to be staff members, then turn around and stab me in the back by stealing my descriptions, images, etc. These people make terrible admins because they set a bad example for their own members and simply give their site a bad reputation.

I allow my members to choose who they want to be a mod. They have to discuss it together and eventually do a vote, like in a democratic process. Members will be nominated, some may even nominate themselves(duh), and they will pick who they think will best be able to do the job right.
This is what has worked for me as an admin. You have to give your members more credit than you think they deserve. As a result, I have gained much trust and have successfully run my forum for the last 3 years. Yes, TRUST IS KEY.

Definitely admin. I love to have the power in my hands, and making skins and contests is a lot of fun. It takes up a lot of time, but if you have no time to dedicate, you shouldn't be wasting away online. Also, if you are just a member, you have pretty much no control and the admin could do lots of really dumb things. Most don't, but I've had a few crazy ones that made me quit. I like being the crazy admin.
