Yes, but any good administrator would also be a member on another board, right? Now if you're going to get to be too crazy, then you might not be cut out as an admin, if you're just talking about random pranks and contests that the members love, that's different. Members do have power, though. If there are no members, then the admins have no activity. Members have the power of the post.

It really depends on the forum for me. There are places where I would have impulses to reach for the controls and say "let me handle this!" and others where I'm satisfied to sit back and enjoy the ride as a member. Though I always get the impulse to help with small forums that need it as a member.
I can't help it ;_;

Constant contests, fun plots, and I run it all. If I'm not cut out to be an admin, ask the members. xD And as an admin, I think the most important thing is to participate as much as the average member does, and more. I role-play with 500 word posts, and I enter my own contests that are decided by a poll, and have about six characters.

Meaning you probably have good member skills, too. Something that everybody has to look at when deciding between being an admin, or just being a member. It's no surprise that a lot of people should choose member, though. At least, not until you're ready to be an admin.

Yeah, it's a tough thing having a forum up and running although it doesn't look like it. I'm and admin and also a member on other forums and honestly I think I'm a good admin and also a good member.
Sure, there're times when your forum is less active but you also have to understand that people have their own lives and as a member of another forum you want the admin to understand it, so you also have to understand it as an admin yourself in your own forum when some of your members are away for a while.
But actually, the more work you put in your forum the more members will enjoy it and stay or even give their own ideas to help you out. If you don't show interest yourself in the forum, your members might think it's going to die and leave it too.

I think I'm a pretty decent admin.
You have to make time to make sure everyone is comfortable and everyone's opinions and suggestions are appreciated, it's your job to know if any of your members are unhappy or feel like they always have the short end of the stick. You have to even things out, don't be biased and lean on someone's side in a fight just because you're their friend. You have to be neutral, strict and fair when it comes to fights.
You have to be the heart of the forum, try and make time to be there every day or so and be very active. You also have to take some time to tweak and experiment with your forum, that's your job. If you can't, you're better off as a member.
You have to have the right personality, never ever EVER exclude anyone just because they're new. You have to make sure that your new members are welcome and don't feel like a lost soul. If you don't, they'll just leave.
Choose your staff CAREFULLY. They have to be people you know PERSONALLY and well. Don't pick them cause they have a lot of posts or they won a contest or cause they asked or just randomly. That is a VERY poor choice, IMO.

That is a VERY poor choice, IMO. I agree that it should not be random, but some sites will have members that you have never met and will never meet. I have a site where I live in the US and some of the members live in Poland. I keep my eyes on each new member to see how they interact, obey the rules, etc. That way, if I need one down the road, I have someone. I don't think knowing them personally is a requirement because then it can seem like a friends club to the other members who do not know you personally. That is why I give very limited powers over time as they work to see if they would be a good staff member or not. It has yet to fail me.

Oh yeah, I mean, not personally as in real-life personal, but just in general as in you've known this person for a long-time and you totally trust them.
I didn't phrase it the right way, sowee.

Both.
I am a member on a lot of sites, and an admin on two. admin is really fun to be apart from when your site dies and you try to bring it back to life, its really hard and can involve messaging each meber individualy. It takes a long time.
been a member is also fun as you can just sit back and enjoy the ride so to speak as you have to do nothing but. Post on threads.

I also like to be an admin and a member, but the two things go different. For example: I like to be a member, 'cos usually I don't have to worry about things which a mod or an admin has to do on its forum. I enjoy being active on forums which I'm interested in and where I have more friends to chat with. Seeing new stuff on their forums and participating in contests. Those are the stuff I usually do among other things. As for being an admin, my forum for me is like a home on the net. If nobody visits it, still I visit it and if I'd abandon it, 'cos of its inactivity, then it would be like abandoning my home..... on the net. Anyway the main part.... being nice to new members is not enough. You need to entertain them, showing them new features, introducing new contents to them, which are either unique or simply interesting and fun to them. ( Almost ) Everybody likes contests such as "Find the hidden smileys" and win the prize. Then there are fanarts, fanfics... depending on the forums' theme and discussions. I've been on many forums and on most I've seen a tagboard ( chatbox ) on its footers. This is important to add ( if you want ), if your forums' settings are set either to "Guests must register" or "Guests must register in order to see a board". Nobody wants to join a forum just in order to see the posts and never visit it again, right? Those shoutboxes can be useful in many ways. The most important thing of a forum and of an admins' task is to secure a members account, so nobody could hack it, if that's possible. I've set all the settings on my forum and increased the security as high as possible. No guest can see anyone's profile and no member can modify them, if those accounts are protected. The administrators responcibility is to keep its forums' members and guests entertained, secured and patience is very important. If I've missed something then I'll probably add it later.

I agree that it can be fun with both. But, I find that I am a natural leader and am very good at running forums. I could use more work on images/colors I have to admit. But a member can be fun also. I just have a tendancy to think I can keep improving other peoples ideas into a better running system. I also think that if you have the time and are dedicated and patient, you should run a forum. If you arent on too much, or just dont have the patience or whatever, you should be a member. That could be fun also.

Im a main admin. I make the most original forum i can out of the resources i have(MS paint, wordpad etc). i use plenty of places to check out. if one of my sites die i attempt to bring it back. If its been at least a month and still no new members then ill move on and take a break from being an admin still visiting the dead site often and advertising it, just not as often as usual. Once i figure out a way to bring it back i bring it back.

This may be out of place, if so I am sorry. I have a senior member that is great, he contributes to the board regularly and is very informative in his post, and has a lot of good idea. I made him a moderator, but I can't seem to be able to grant or give him any powers. My question is how do I transfer powers to him any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help.

Admin.
The reason being because I have responsibilities to help make/run/own the forum.
