I'm not sure if this has been brought up or not, but Web-Rings are pretty effective. I just started my own Web-Ring at ringsworld.com, but I have yet to see if it is effective. I have seen other sites prosper from them, however. For those of you who don't know what it is, a Web-Ring is a thing where you submit your site to the "Ring Master" and they look over your site. If they approve, they will admit your site into the Web-Ring. Usually, Web-Rings are broken up into genres. So, there are web-rings for Roleplaying, General, Sudoku, etc. If you don't want to create your own ring, then try surfing the net for rings to join. I'm sure it'll help your ProBoard get out there and be known.

First I want to let you know that some of my clients have paid me $70/hour and/or monthly fees to Consult and/or perform these methods on their sites so this is quality information that really does work and it is yours free.
First you need to become an authority on your topic. In other words when people think about __________ they think of your board(the blank space is your topic).
To do this provide more than a chatting forum. If you own a Football forum use MSN sports to post news everyday(I believe this is acceptable with the TOS. If not sorry). Or write articles on Football. Write articles on how to play, win, each aspect of it and tips. you'd be surprised how much good traffic this can pull in.
Setup a website along with your forum so that you have a place to put anything else related to Football.
Joking around is okay but keep it to the GT section. Newbies/or\potential newbies may leave if there is a bunch of nonsense. Keep your forum open as in welcome to newbies. Let them know you are there to help them and be sure to answer there questions. Don't just lock a thread because it was put in the wrong forum. move it to the appropriate one and DON'T give out a warning. Warnings are for continued disobedience and spamming not for a mistake like that.
As said before become an authority for Football. Have all the info any Football fan would want. Have a thread for upcoming Football events and post when one is coming up. Above all whatever you do you must know a good deal about what your doing. When I am looking for a forum on a subject I need help with I know whether the posters know what their talking about and bet your life I won't be their ten seconds if it is a bunch of nonesense and un-knowledgable members. This has alot to do with advertising.
Some are probably thinking it doesn't but it does. Believe me it does. Using these methods is the best kind of advertising. If your site has the content part the advertising part is process which runs itself. If you don't believe it try it.
And lastly don't submit to search engines manually or automatically to millions. Neither work. Don't spam blogs, forums, guestbooks with your links as that is very unthoughtful and very ineffective.
And be sure to join other related forums. Find all the football forums you can and join. Post alot and make sure your posting informational posts of use. Useless jibberish will not help you. With the link to your forum in your sig it can bring traffic who like your information. This works well. I get over 2000 people a month just from one forum I post regularly on. But this forum is targeted to my site. Unrelated forums will not help much.
Hope this has helped you!

Add them to the Main Header/Footer.
As for the description of your forum and so on, I guess you can put them below - as in the footer.

I think that some of the best advertising comes from advertising forums not being biased! But i go to advertising forums and will find sites that i like and join them i did it recently with extreme data! Plus since i advertise in the new part here i got about 10 more members! Use advertising forums they work!

- META TAGs - a lot of people will tell you that META TAGs are a waste of time, and that most major search engines no longer use them. However, smaller search engines do use them and they cannot hurt. I use META tags on my forum, and search my keywords and find my site, so META Tags do work.
Below I will post an example of how a graphics forum may set up their META tags. This will go in the bottom of your headers:
___________________________________________________ <head> <title> The Name of Your Site/Forum</title> <meta name="description" content=" Short Description Of Your Site/Forum"> <meta name="keywords" content=" Add Keywords Here Separated By A Coma, For Example;
photoshop, paint shop pro, graphics, design, avatars, banners, custom"> </head>~Myke Pardon me but I cannot sem to get this to work, does it go in the Global Header? Here's what I got and where do I put it please? Also, Google was to verify...where does their meta go in all this? <html> <head> <title>Integrated Close Combat Forum</title> <meta name="description" content="A serious forum covering all aspects of close personal combat (armed and unarmed), self protection, and preparedness."> <meta name="keywords" content="combat, pointshooting, point shooting, handgun, rifle, shotgun, Fairbairn, Sykes, Applegate, H2H, JuJutsu, combatives"> </head> The meta tags are read by ALL engines. They don't need specific ones for each however some don't acknowledge certain parts of the meta tags. Such as Google ignores the keyword tag. Put it in the main header and then a separate meta tags in each header for each board. Having duplicate meta tags looks spammy and will lower the value of the page.

this is how i'm going to advertise my forum:
i'm going to make a commercial, and put it up on youtube ('cause who doesnt check out youtube!!)
but this might not work with all forums, cause i guess it depends on what your forum is about.

lol very true one thing that i find is that advertising out side of proboards isnt as effective, for example when advertising on google it is not that often that someone accidently comes across your forum clicks on it and then is intrested and joins and will remain active! I think that advertising within proboards has a much greater effect! For example join a forum ( preferbly advertising as other can get ennoyed for you cluttering their board with adverts!) then advertise. As it is much more likely for someone from proboards to see your link on a forum or in a sig then click that and join your site and remain active as they already understand what proboards is all about! Any1 agree ?

As it is much more likely for someone from proboards to see your link on a forum or in a sig then click that and join your site and remain active as they already understand what proboards is all about! Any1 agree ? Somewhat, yes. I've found that a lot of people who find your forum on Google, or another search engine, is researching something, looking for a written answer to something, as opposed looking for a forum to join and participate at. People already on a forum community, be it here, or their own personal forums, are already interested in being part of a forum community, and are far more likely to join another forum then your average Googler who is a part of no forum, and is just researching something. But that's not to say Google and the other engines cannot produce active members, sometimes people simply look on search engines for specific types of forums they may be interested in joining. So don't cont the search engines short. About 'advertising' on other forums, I think you'll find it far more effective if you become an active, quality member on a forum in the same topic as yours, and just use your sig banner to advertise with. That is far more effective then joining advertising forums, or joining other forums simply to only advertise in their advertising board. Advertising is everywhere, TV, pop ups, on web pages, etc. As a TV viewer and an internet user, I've seen enough advertising to last me a life time. I'm far more likely to click a good looking banner that represents a topic that interests me then I am to click on a link that says: CLick & JOIN- we need members!.

I am going to try a new way of advertisements(not sure if this has been posted, yet), I am going to make a yahoo and myspace group and put a link to my forum there and make the group as active as possible. Sometimes people randomly come across these groups and they help me to get more members. I am hoping this works, but I can also place links to these groups and the forum wherever I go, it might work, just might. Anyone else tried that?

Well, from what i've found, ads on other sites almost never get clicked on, and word-of-mouth only happens if you get a really dedicated member. Getting members is a fickle thing.

I have to agree and disagree, advertising forums do work i have had many successful joining to others from mine! Plus i often go on to other advertising forums and just skim through some of the forums! And have quite often joined a good one!
But i also agree that staying active on a forum is crucial to getting you members! If you go on an advertising forum and remian active you are likley to get members! I agree with your point about being active on a forum the same subject as yours but at the same time some advertising forums eg. mine have lots of members that when see a forum are willing to try something new, or have enough members that will fit to wide ranges of boards!

^ Exactly, you don't know what other people's interests are. They might like Star Wars AND horses for example. I've always advertised on forums that have nothing to do with my subject & it's never hurt. Word of mouth never works for me, I get little interest but they don't stay, but a siggy works well. Others may differ

^ i agree with you i like trying new forums also not just the usuall topics that i join. I think this is kind of the whole idea of proboards to get to know people start a forum community. So if people are able to advertise and chat on the same forum this is great!

A good way to advertise is to offer your current members something like a reward for inviting a friend. For example, on my HP forum, I offer House Points (and galleons, when I use them) for bringing friends in. I've gotten a lot of members this way.
Also, to Pikablu, I've set up a Myspace for my forum, not just a group. I've found it to be highly effective and you can also offer rewards for your forum's members to comment/top 8 you/etc. Again, I offer House Points to my members, as I run a Harry Potter Forum. You can find a link to my forum's myspace in my signature if you'd like an idea. A good way to get your forum's myspace seen is to comment on friends' pages. Whether it's a greeting, a thank you for adding, or a 'come visit us!' (my version of this is a Hogwarts Acceptance Letter, which people love), it will get your forum seen and people will respond to it if they find it interesting.
Also another way to advertise is to post your link anywhere--AIM profiles, Fanfiction.Net profiles, Facebook (You could use this the same way as Myspace, but might not get as much response because you can't actually view the profile until you're friends with the person, but it's always worth a try, right?), and any other site that lets you provide a link, like when you're a member of another ProBoards forum.
Another method I've found effective in keeping long-lasting members is e-mails. I would go on FF.Net and e-mail random Harry Potter fanatics and simply let them know about our site and what we're about---the key is to not sound desperate, and not to appear desperate (make sure you've got a good number of members and/or posts). Be inviting and positive, and simply ask them to join. Don't make it seem as if the world as we know it will be over if they reject your offer.
There's just so many creative ways to advertise; don't limit yourself or give up! I hope some of my tips have helped!
