One thing that I have found well is that goyab can be a great place if you know what you are targeting. Look for forums with a similar topic to yours, than make sure you give them suggestions specifically in that topic area that only someone in that topic area would have a guess about. This gives the suggestion that you are knowledgable about the topic, and also helps them alot more than just the usual post. Because while you're in there you have a sig pointing to your forum. This can be one of your biggest sources if you do it on a consistentent basis. Because what is better than a forum full of younger admins who look up to a bigger admin, than their forums may affiliate with yours. (I say small younger admins becasue most goyab thread starters are new to this sort of thing)
Just some thoughts, Fullphaser

- Affiliates - Contrary to popular belief, affiliates do work. I, and many other has received members from affiliates from other forums.
It is also not a good idea to only affiliate with boards of the same genre, For example, if you own a Harry Potter forum, why only affiliate with other Harry Potter forums. Those people who will be seeing your banner already have a place to discuss Harry Potter. I have found it best to affiliate with all kinds of different sites. for example, if a HP forum affiliates with a sports forum, then a member of the sports forum may also like Harry Potter, and may not have a place to discuss Harry Potter. So don't restrict your affiliates to your own genre, affiliate with all types of forums.
I understand this is a stupid question, but how do you acquire affiliates...?

My way of Advertising sites is to go onto other forums, go onto the General Board and make a list of the forum I made. Also a "Please Join" in the text is also required to advertise. Maybe that all forums need advertise your forum/promote your website/post your proboard boards. My way of advertising is some rules on my affiliates board on my forum. Also another way to advertise is to make a signature which says Please Join!!!! But the nastiest way to advertise is "I'll join Yours if you join Mine"!! and also advertising in other peoples threads, for you lot, that would mean that will be a sign of Hijacking.
That's my way of advertising

But the nastiest way to advertise is "I'll join Yours if you join Mine"!! and also advertising in other peoples threads, for you lot, that would mean that will be a sign of Hijacking. That's my way of advertising Darth Shockeye Those are mostly terrible ways of advertising. The hijacking thing is seen by others as annoying, and is seen as something that only desperate people would do. When you see an ad on a magazine, or see a commercial on TV, do they try to sell the product, do they try to make you think you should have that product, or do they act desperate and say "please buy our product, not many people are buying it, and we need more people to buy it"? Coming off as desperate like that will not help you get any members. Members want to join a forum that they think they can enjoy, one that has the potential to last. But when people see the forum's admin spamming hijacking other peoples' threads, they will think that this admin is desperate, and if he has to hijack threads then his forum must not be very good at all. As for the join for join thing, another terrible idea. All in all I think the sentence "Please join" is one that should be left out of all advertising. Effective advertising is presenting the forum to people, make the description of the forum sound interesting, and if you're using an image make sure it is eye catching and interesting. It's a given that people can join, so to say "please join" is a little redundant.

Ok what I did to advertise our forum... well not sure if that is considered spamming or not, but it worked well and hopefully continues to do so in the future. I have a program called short keys, which will paste the same message over and over again, if you hit the key. I set up following message: Hello, I would like to invite you to join our new DEATH PENALTY DISCUSSION BOARD online. ANTI and PRO stance is WELCOME. We debate the Death Penalty in the USA and World Wide, and also crime and other political topics. xxxxxxxxxx.proboards74.com/index.cgiwe also have a brand new website at xxxxxxxxx.com -not all information is there yet, but it is updated weekly with many more things to come.
I do join several groups on yahoo, that could have interest in this topic, like religious groups, other death penalty groups, criminal justice groups, victims groups, anything that comes to mind... and post this message ONCE.... It has worked very well for us, in just 6 weeks we gained more than 150 members... but of course it is also time consumpting to sign up with those groups, post your message. But we have a growing membership now, although I guess related to the topic we also have a lot of lurkers that have not posted yet... but some people need time. Carry

I just have a section in the general board called general forums, this is where people can advertise their forum, i also go to other sites that people have advertised their forum on, and find the perfect place to advertise mine.
