I have never seen anyone advertise via Facebook and Myspace for their forums I guess. Does that really work? Do people really join and stay active? I would see it as one of those things you add that you are a fan of, but that no one else does anything with beyond joining the group. Does it really work? Yes and no. I have found maybe one or two people on Facebook and/or myspace, but most people who are my friends in RL are not RPers. Since I only add actual aquiantences or RL friends, I reach them on aim or in person before they would see it on my myspace/facebook. Now i have had people join my board and never post other than their character application which really is saddening. I always would like more members especially since a military RPG require more of a quantity over quality, although quality is good. Like in Real Life, i need to make recruiting quotas <V>^_^

Well have you got it rated yet? If not, I suggest you do, and maybe someone will tell you some things to improve on. Then you might get more members. I advertise a lot as well, but I hardly ever get new members. I think it's just because there's a certain type of board that people like, and they're like trends. Right now its' Real life/harry potter/twilight boards. No one wants to join a wolf board.

Affiliates - TalkPark gets about 100 uniques a day from affiliates alone. Affiliate with forums with members that sign in daily. Affiliation is mutual, so you should be getting hits not just their site.
PB Ads - My site gets about 20 per day from PBAds, very handy, and you're always bound to get a few solid members by bumping consistently.
Posting for critique - Get your forums featured at the big design boards that offer featured showcases. TalkPark gets about 50 unique hits from this per day.
Search Engines - after bots crawl your site, you'll be getting crazy search engine hits. we pull in as much as 500 uniques per day off of google + yahoo
Being active at OTHER communities - the most important thing to do is to post regularly at other popular communities, making friends, and creating a sort of "following" that will migrate with you to w/e forum you go to.

It's shame to see new forum admins, who believe just because they created a forum, it's going to be popular and active. I've been up for 13 months now, have gained over 350 members, and almost 40,000 posts ... and i still advertise EVERY SINGLE day. It's the most crucial part of having a successful forum. Memebrs won't find the forum, you have to go out and find them I usually advertise on www.forumpromotion.net <--- great services , and post exchanges GUARANTEE you new member activty. I LOVE PB's Support , here, but advertising here really did nothing for my forum

Sometimes it can get annoying to see how "neighbour" forums get thousands of guests and members a day while yours doesn't go from square one and they were both in the same date. I'm also speaking for experience on other forums, but what is it, is there some kind of strategy I'm missing out? It seems people find affiliates out of thin air while I'm looking under the shelves in search for a single one to not even find any.

It's true that you have to be persistent. I advertise all the time but I'm trying to spread my spotlight off of the proboards support forum. I guess this is where affiliates come in. I've been wary of affiliations because what I don't want is for 100 people to sign up, post once and then leave. I want active members! I also want a more mature demographic. I've got more immature 16 year olds than I can shake a stick at. Where are all the 20 somethings?!
