Should I Customize My ProBoard?

You should add nice backgrounds and custome buttons if you can, i think it makes everything look much better and gives your members the choice to make the board appear in diffirent themes that they like. I've tried to offer alot of skin and am now working on adding buttons to match each skin.

Layout-Codes

I would change the layout to much just becuase other proboards users get used to the way it is and it can be confusing if you change it up. Adding a few cool things is nice though, a welcome center, shout box, shop ect.. thats always cool.

I think graphics is a biggie. If you want to custmize your forum to be the best, graphics are one of the best. not to forget awesome members. sorry, sohrt post >.<

I think you should customize your forum a little, but not so much that it makes it ridiculously hard to load or use. If you make it too graphical, then it makes it hard for dial-up users like me to use. It also makes some areas hard to navigate. KISS, that's my motto.

I've been to hundreds, if not thousands, of sites and forums in my years on the internet, and I've found that the popularity of sites equates a lot to real life. 85% of the success of your forum will be from appearance.

That sounds way too dramatic, I know, but it's true, and here's why:

The first thing that someone will see when entering your site is your banner. Hence, that is lure #1 to getting people interested. An excellent banner will catch the interest of someone. If you have a good quality banner, then maybe the rest of your site is good quality to.

The colors you choose for your skin are also very important. You want contrast, but not contrast that's so stark it gives people a headache. People like appealing themes, which mostly consist of a them of many different shades of the same one to three colors. If the skin is inviting, another plus is added to the intrigue.

Then there is added images and additions on the main page. Do you use an image for your background, making a more fun and intriguing look; or do you make the background into a forum border, creating the appearance of professional and clean work? Do you have a welcome table that introduces the theme of your site, and if so, does it have images, links, and other fun items for new people to use to get to know your forum better? Are your categories clumped together or split apart? Do you use images to replace the title and category backgrounds to add depth or do you leave them blank for simplicity?

There are so many things you can do to the main page of your forum alone to make it look more appealing. Most of the time, if you can draw someone in with the first page, you've got yourself a member. At the beginning, it doesn't matter if you have amazingly creative boards and activities for members to take part in. They won't even look at your boards if your forum itself is not visually appealing; so that content you worked so hard on is for not, because no one will ever look at the content if they are not pulled in by visual stimuli.

If your site looks professionally done, many people will take that to believe that it is professionally done. Your site's appearance gives you, as an Admin, credibility. If you can figure out what appeals to the audience that you are trying to draw to your site, you will undoubtedly have them rolling in by the truck loads.

And that, my friends, is all I can say for now, as I believe I've rambled myself dry.

I mostly use codes from SoCal that add extra features to my forum. Like before the real AddonChat integration was built in to forums, i used a code that did that. i also use chat room codes and SayBox. Those are mainly the codes i use.

It might be a good idea to create some of your own skins AND add some pre-made skins. That way if you're a..."dramatic" skin maker (a friend of mine is...her's is....bright) they can switch

Also, just because a forum LOOKS good doesn't mean it IS. One forum I know of, they look VERY professional... and all the staff are snobs. They banned one member for "not fitting in"

Personally I think every graphics wise should be customized! It gives a sense of uniqueness to the board, how in your face the gfx are depends on the type of board. Graphic design boards have a tendency to be high tech in your face boards, (please note i'm not using in your face as a bad term her i just couldnt think of any other way to put it) whereas a board disucussing say...... flowers would be more suttle, and bland maybe.

I believe it is nice to customize your forum. But I was wondering if you could use backgrounds and images from other websites (not forums). I really don't want to do anything dumb. I only want to customize my forums. (with pics from image gallerys that relate to the subject of the forum)
