Here are mine.
Do not disrespect people regardless of age/race/gender/sexuality/religion/beliefs
It's honestly disheartening when you see people bully others because of their race, gender, age, religion, etc. Everyone should be treated like an equal.
No discussion of sensitive topics anywhere
Sensitive topics like religion and politics can drive people away and cause pretty serious arguments. Not a wise idea to discuss them if you don't want anyone "heartbroken", or offended.
I may add more but these are my 2 main, default ones.

Personally, I think that depends on the rationality and good–naturedness of your members: how well they practice the Golden Rule, Do Unto Others, Be Excellent To Each Other — that manner of thing. Maybe make a special board for that: call it Controversial Topics. Then, require members belong to an open group to be able to view it. Anyway. I have one which really should not need to be said, but it occurred recently with me. (Revised thanks to a helpful criticism:) I'm not sure I agree with the need for closing a forum if the Admin takes an extended absence. Sometimes people can benefit from just reading conversations which occurred in the past. And if you go to /posts/recent you can examine the timestamps to determine how long it has been since the most recent post was made and the frequency of recent activity. Then it's your choice as to whether or not to participate in a forum which has had little recent activity. Do not complain about lack of activity in your boards and then completely abandon them. (Indeed, don't abandon them at all.)I joined one such site two months after the admin's latest visit and three days after the same from the only other user at the time. I posted in almost every board. This same site had a “Vacay or Stay?” board, but the poor admin probably lost hope and neglected to use it when she left. I kept my account there on the chance that one of them remembers to visit some day… I've also joined one board which was abandoned by the only admin and had no moderators; later, while browsing around, I learned that all the activity was because it become overrun by accounts registered for advertiser bots. Some boards do not attract those bots, though. I wonder what they use for criteria? Perhaps we can learn which keywords which attract those people who know how to bypass RECAPTCHA 2 for their bots. If you wish to permanently leave your boards, and those boards also have no moderators or other administrators to continue maintaining them in your stead, then close them you should consider disabling registration. Who wants to post on a board abandoned by its only admin? The only exception here is if you were injured, hospitalized, or the like.

I'm very keen on your idea for an opt-in (or opt-out) for specific boards on a forum that host topics which tend to have 'spirited discussions'.
