Again, that is subjective. We don't all have the same requirements, tastes, likes/dislikes. And that's a good thing.
As I said, I've been to forums where personally, I cannot easily read content because of small dark print on a dark background, yet the forum is active and alive. So obviously, my inability to easily read the text is not another's.
As they say, you can't please everyone ~ in food, in style, in form.
I've seen forums whose titles do not reflect the content or intent of the forum in the least.
The title implies they are interested in a certain group, or genre, or subject, and yet the categories and boards aren't reflective of the intent.
For me, it's about the intent and content of the forum. If it's something I like, I'd join, even if their tastes are not my tastes.
My friends are varied, with varied tastes. I wouldn't want them to dress to please me. I want them to dress to reflect who they are. It's the content of the person that makes them my friend. Everything else is just "decorating". And thankfully, we all have our own styles. A cookie cutter world is boring.
And that's why ProBoards is so popular. Because every board can be customized to the creator's vision. From young teens to seniors . . . the audience is wide. And with that wide audience comes a wide spectrum of what suits one group and not another. What pleases a teen will not necessarily please an adult or senior and vice versa. ProBoards recognizes that and allows for individual expression.

How does facebook make a forum die? Because before facebook was popular lots of forums were very popular. Now you can't seem to drag people away from Facebook for 2 minutes anymore and nobody wants to register an account unless they can through facebook connect.

You may have just given a good suggestion (facebook connect).

I believe that's been marked as a feature request on the support board.

I've seen forums where I can't even find the login/register button, now that pushes away new users.
what we do on my site is I put a link in the nav bar to register and a redirect board so users can clearly see how to register.

Lol, if they make it difficult to log in or register, I'm not sure they are looking for members.

You have a point there - it's quite sad to be honest.

Whether a forum is living or dying, the admin can still improve, still post content and still maintain his/her forum.

I agree, @womenonly and The Maniac On Wheels (The MOW) . After all, we all start a forum because it's something we're interested in. And as long as that interest is still there, I think it's great to keep improving and adding content to your forum. You never know when or where you'll find that perfect advertising venue that will spark the interest for members to join in.

Oh yes, I do agree! I am still trying to gain members despite a small lack of success with my recent forum. The reason I keep going and I'm not giving up is because years ago I had the same problem. Back in 2013 I started a small forum - it was very empty for months on end, but then my luck turned and with time it gained over 2,300 members and counting. I still keep it up and running, and new members still join.

Exactly, @silenced , a forum only truly dies when the admin has given up on it. Otherwise, there is still life.

Having a lot of members are just membership numbers. In active members do help a forum die.

Having a lot of members are just membership numbers. In active members do help a forum die. Though if you only have sincerity and "wanting" to maintain a forum, it won't go far. You'll end up being the only on there. Whilst the member numbers make the forums look for occupied and active - which pulls new members in.
