I'm pretty happy about having sub-boards because I don't like making separate boards for each, different subjects on my main forum page. Having sub-boards on my forum, actually helps me to re-group, merged or managed related topics together which makes my forum more organized and consistent. The more consistent it is, the less I have to scroll to get to a certain board to look up the materials.
I can understand the over use of subs-boards and how confusion can stir up if a main-board is similar to it's own sub-board or another sub-board. I guess it could also depend on the content that goes into the sub-boards. If a sub-board content is close enough to the main board content, it's easy to merge it together and take apart. I think it also depends on how the sub-boards is described or labeled. If one or two boards looks a like, members may get confused and think that the board they want to post in isn't the one they shouldn't post in.
As we all know, the thread gets moved to its correct board and it happens all the time. As a staff in your forum, it's easy to address the issue in a friendly, polite way by just directing members to the right board with a link and explain why it's being moved here or there. Sometimes I use sub-boards to evaluate whether a new subject will be a success or not. If it is successful, I keep it as a sub-board, if not, I just merge it with the main-board that is related.
