Most Recent Post are generally found in the information center of the forum. It is a link that provides a list of the latest post made. Many times it is default and shows the last 15 post of any open boards but, it can be set to have more or less post. If guess are allowed to view the boards, then they will be able to view the most recent post. However, if the boards are not viewable to guest, then those post will not be seen in the most recent post.
Do you think that this is a good tool to have on a forum? Have you used it yourself?
I personally have used them when visiting another forum. As a guest, I use it to see what kind of post are being made and what the activity is like.
That being said, I have removed the code from my information center and have it in the pm system. As an admin, I find that this way members will have to log in to see the content. And as for guest...I think making them look through the open boards and threads, not just the post, gives them a better idea of what the forum is about.

I do use it on other boards, mostly to see what activity they've had. I have quite a few boards open & viewable to guests but I still let them see the last 10 recent posts if they want to. I change the numbers accordingly, but as said above, it's better to get some idea from the forums themselves. You don't get so much of the gist of the conversation sometimes in just a list of posts

I use it, being an admin, rather than trying to find all the recent posts. It's good to be able to see- at a glance- everything that's goin on in my forum.

My first port of call is the far right column to see any new posts. Scroll down to see who's posted what and its rather disheartening when its just me I do use the most recent posts option, probably more on here than I do on my own boards, especially if I'm referring back to previous threads I might have replied on myself. What I would like as an option would be the most recent threads to appear as a single line link rather than one reply. This would save me scrolling down actual thread examples and enable me to select a higher number in the total box.

I thought the default was 10. You may delete this post once you read it, I'm just pointing something out.

It is a fine tool, but not one of the most effective to me. I have used it at times, but it is rare. Usually, I look to see who posted last and where and go read that...or I look for the old/new icons to have changed to indicate it. It is rare I rely on the last ten posts of the forum. That being said, there are times I will use the feature, however rarely. It tends to be when I have made a post and there are numerous active members online. I do that because if someone posted ahead of me in a thread, the thread will not show as new since I posted last in it. That is rare on some forums, but it helps me keep up with other thoughts in the thread.

As an admin, or as a member, I don't think I have ever used it, at least not to check through all the recent posts. Basically, I don't think I have ever used it for the purpose it serves. (And, really, I don't think I have for any other reason, either).
As as guest or new member, I just find it easier to browse around myself for a true sense of the forum. Sometimes the "last ten posts" will be just all in one thread, and from that you can't really get a true sense of what the focus of the forum is. I think you get a much more accurate reading by browsing through boards and threads yourself to see what is going on (maybe cluing in on the side bar with "last post made by... at ..." to find out which topics were recently posted in. I don't think I've ever used to "view last ten posts" feature to get a telling of a new forum.
As an admin, I don't rely on it either. I generally just go through the boards that are "on" with the on/off icons and read through all the new posts that way. Partly because I can be more organized and partly because sometimes there are more than 10 new posts since I was last on. And sometimes I want to check some boards before others and this way I go to which threads and posts I want to first.
However, I do not think I would disable it, not knowing whether guests or my members use the feature themselves.

I find that the Most Recent Posts are really helpful. Please do not just post a comment. This is a discussion, give the reader something to respond to...ex:...tell them why they are helpful...when you use them, are you an admin of a forum and do you use them as a member or admin....Please post a minimum of four sentences.

Most recent posts are okay I guess. If I need to find a recent post made by one specific member it comes in really handy. The 100 most recent posts section is great too, and I have several members on my forum who are very dependent on it--however, it has a flaw. Non-staff members are able to read posts made on staff-only boards in this section, and are able to view posts made on password protected boards. One member didn't realize these boards were PW protected and staff only, so she clicked on the link to the thread and posted. (Meaning the forum actually let this non-staff into the board. She was even able to read over other threads!) She apologized and hasn't seemed to return--but it's definatley a problem...

Intersting, you are the second person to say that.....Perhaps the groups should be modified too...When making the board it ask which groups are allowed to view threads...might want to double check that as well....that was my problem when I had them....now I only allow members view them as an option in thier PM system.
