I guess it all depends on the person and the forum. I for one actually like to use the "Users Online Today" code, because it does let you know how many people have been on the forum. However with that said, I did notice that there was a slight decreese in activity on my forum since I've had the code installed.

Here that code. Main Footer <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- /* users online today v2 coded by ross of 101support.proboards43.com special thanks to chris of studiozero.proboards44.com for hosting it not to be reposted anywhere main footer */ // Edit this variable if you want to use a different image. var icon_url = "http://s1.images.proboards.com/online.gif"; function include(action, file) { var forum = location.href.replace(/^http:\/\/(www\.)?/, '').split(/\./); forum = forum[0] + forum[1]; var action = '&f=' + forum + '&' + action.replace(/%/g, '%25'); var file = (file)? file : 'users_online_today.php'; var new_script = document.createElement('script'); new_script.type = 'text/javascript'; new_script.src = 'http://iycatacombs.com/ross/users_online/' + file + '?' + action; document.getElementsByTagName('head').item(0).appendChild(new_script); } if(location.href.match(/\.com\/?(index.cgi)?\??(&?action=home)?(#.+?)?$/) && !document.postForm) { include('', 'v2.js'); } else if(document.modifyForm) { document.cookie = 'activity_logged=false;'; } //--> </script>

My board is on server 46, so I don't yet have this facility, but it is one that I am looking forward to having. It will make it easy to see at a glance who has been online within last 24hrs without going through admin function, really handy for noticing the non posters who visit frequently but don't contribute. Checking someones profile only tells you when they were last on line, but doesn't actually tell you they may have visited your board everyday for the past month, but just not at a time you were logged on.
Will only know once we have the 4.5 upgrade if it is going to be useful, but I suspect it will be.

I love this feaure. I had a member once who was a very active member but all of a sudden never posted. I wondered and wondered what had happened to this member and if they had been visitng the board at all, come to find out they have because their name showed up in the users online in past 24 hrs. I suppose I could have just looked at their profile for last login date but this was much easier. I then decided to ask this person why have you not posted in so long? I feel that it helps me figure out if there is a problem a particular member may have and does not want to post for some reason or another and maybe I can fix it.
I also think seeing how many guests in 24hrs really gives your board some extra eye candy. People like busy boards, I am much more tempted to join a board that at least shows SOME activity rather than 0 members online 2 guests online. I think you can get quite a bit of information about members if it's used right, it can tell you alot.

Well it's a generally good feature in my opinion, it's quite useful for those who are looking for active forums but maybe not for the less active and too active ones. Forums like this have too many people logging in each day and like pointed out above, it takes longer to login, which is then a pain because of it becoming annoying. Younger forums will also need to have this option disabled because it shows that only 4 people came online in that day for example, not a great advertising boost is it?
Meanwhile, forums that are typically RPG based usually have members returning most days, so it may be beneficial for those because it rates the activity quite well. RPG lovers will then be able to see that it's a good forum and join up.
So yea, i generally think that it's a good feature, rather surprised since i read a few years ago that the people viewing boards feature wasn't going to come in V4 because Pat believes it's against a person's privacy. But i generally think that this will work well for the forums which deserve it, although it may be a punishment if enabled on a forum that is trying to gain new members.

The v4.5 code is a "capture all" code whereas the code posted here, useful though that it is, only seems to capture those who have actually posted or changed something rather than just visited. It misses people that just briefly browse then move on.

I beginning to wonder about this feature now due to what has been happening on my own forum. My stats say that I've had around 97 people online at once and over 200 online in the past 24hrs, my board is only a few weeks old so this cannot be right.
I'm thinking because my board is registered with boardreader that the reason my stats are so huge would be because it's being overwhelmed with bots?
I have no idea.
I can only assume that this feature counts something when the forums are being spidered and if thats the case this feature will only give out wrong statistics and not accurate ones. I don't believe that I've had anywhere NEAR those numbers ha ha
Wish I did though.

I wouldn't complain if i was you lol, great advertising that. If you do have a problem though, see if there's going to be a fix or if anybody else is experiencing this in the V4.5 board.

I just won the lottery lol Check the IP addresses of these guests. You'll soon begin to see a regular pattern to them. The overwhelming majority of those hits will be bots. It's a pity there isn't an addition to the new Users Online Today code that checks against known IPs and gives admin the info and the chance to choose whether to display this info to the forum.

I don't use it. ^_^ I've two forums that were converted and once that was done I immediately switched it off. I personally don't care who's been online in the past 24 hours; I care who's currently online (it might be someone I'd like to speak with), and who posts. I think it's a bit of a waste, really, if you want to know if someone's been online in the past day, go to their profile and look, it's really not that hard. I see some benefits to it, but it's not an addition that I care for... but, like HD said, it doesn't keep me up at night. For me I personally DO care who's been online in the past 24 hours. However I only have "Users Online." I decided to contact support because I notice another Proboard foum had that option:
Active Users In The Past 24 Hours
Can someone please tell me why I don't have that? Or if it is available how to turn it on?
Thanks in advance,
Starr

I love the 'Users Onlint Today' in the Inforcenter. I like the fact that I know who's been on, and who I do not expect to see posts from.
Of course, some people do not show up, yes that's true. It's one of the few downsides, as well as fake accounts which I do not pull for.
If you have an Rp board, and they can see how many people are active out of how many are on the board, there is more of a chance that they'll join just knowing if the board is active or not.
