I got a confession to make. When I ban someone off my board, How do I avoid banning they're IP address, The reason well being is I don't want to banned they're IP address. so what's a good way to bann people of the site without banning the IP address. When you view their profile, click on ban member. A new page will show up. Uncheck the box next to 'IP Address' then click on 'Ban User' and their account and email will be banned, but not their IP.

I have banned a few IPs in the past but you could miss out on potential members. I usually use warnings, other ways of banning or some other alternative route. For me IP banning is quite drastic but can also be a life saver as long as their IP doesn't change.

How can I find out exactly where my posters come from? The 'look up' sites, generally give the location of the ISP's headquarters. Then there's one I get from a troublemaker in San Francisco, with an IP like...PPproxy brasi. Another IP came up as 'Private' WhOIS search of my IP has me in the Netherlands; I'm in fact in England! Is there a recommended, reliable site which can locate visitors? I didn't see this question answered anywhere. I would like to know the answer to this too. Is there a site to locate and pinpoint where the user's computer is?

If you don't know your own IP, here's a simple way to find out. If you're using Windows9x/Me, type WINIPCFG.exe in the command prompt For Windows 2K/XP, type IPCONFIG.exe instead If you have your ISP assign you dynamic IP, you could simply change your IP in the following steps: 1. Go to Start----> Run 2. type cmd.exe and enter 3. type in ipconfig /flushdns 4. type in ipconfig /release 5. type in ipconfig /renew 6. exit I have heard of this before and can someone explain exactly what this does. For example if your IP is 123.456.789.01---will it change it to for example 456.578.567.24. I would appreciate a detail answer that will tell me this and also if you did banned someone could that person enter your site again as a new IP after entering that command in their computer? I would also like to know how you could detect this change if that is what it actually does. Thanks

If you have to go so far as to issue an IP ban, then it's time to take more serious steps than banning.
At this point, you are decoupling the punishment from the offender. It would be a good idea to get in touch with whoever manages the IP address.

i just thought i would post this because some people might think if they are banned they cant get back on, but thats not true, see below:
if you ban a school or someone, and they wanted to get back on, if they went on normally, it would show the banned message, but if they used a proxy they would be able to see all your content on your forum.
anytime off ban would not stop, the person using a proxy because the proxy generates a totally different ip address, to what you have banned.

I was wondering, with 2 people that have identical IP's is there a way to find out if they are the same person or not. Such as, if I had both of their emails as well (which they have both emailed me) is it possible to find out if they are one person? It's a long story, but both of them have emailed me as different people, but they both carry the same IP. I need to know if they are indeed the same person. It's hard to imagine that on a board with only 40 people, that BOTH live in the same city, same state, and on the same sites. I'm sure you can see how this would be difficult to accept and it would seem to me the likelihood of that happening would be remote. at least to me it seems unlikely...
Can somebody tell me if there is a way to find out from their emails?
Thanks Lann

An example is: www.whatsmyip.org/ . Instead of doing such a difficult process Another good site is internetfrog.comI've found it quite useful. As for wildcard banning... I think I may need to do this, as I've have multiple similar IP's showing up on my board. And I've had a lot of people register under the same IP or similar (they all come from the same area). All they do is register and never post... I'm assuming they are merely spying. I think I'll be able to use this to keep them away. I don't need unused member accounts on my board. I also have the same problem with guests... but they don't register. There has been one IP and similar that is always "hovering" on my board as a guest. Frankly it annoys me, especially when looking up the IP, I do not get an address, so I don't know where this "person" is coming from. Also... I'm wondering.. is this static IP thing the reason I'll get multiple similar IP's as guests, at the same time?

Anyone who looks at it can see their IP, ISP, Internet Browser, and Operation System

That might be a bit of an invasion of privacy... ;-p Some people may not want to give out all that personal information.
Wildcard banning could be a touchy thing though. Because how are we supposed to know if its' a potential member with a static IP or just some spammers or bots?

I didn't mean it like that The person who is currently looking at the image can see their info, but no one else can. I also have no record of who sees my images, because, it is an invasion of privacy, plus I wouldn't know who you were anyway

Okay, I've been having a lot of problem lately with spammers... And (maybe I'm doing something wrong), but I've tried banning them as a wildcard with the "*" but it doesn't seem to work. Once the ban list is updated, the "*" is gone and the IP will come back as almost the same.
I'd like to see if I can get this to work instead of having to C/P every IP of every different spam message that gets posted.

Hi, this thread isn't to tell people how to get around an IP ban. Please keep all mentions of that to yourself please.
