Not an entire forum, no. I've got the rules (with FAQ sub-board), help board, and profile boards available to view (but not post) to guests on my RP site. This way, the only threads guests can view are the ones that they'll need to know before registering, and there's no complaints about "too many boards to look at" as they can't access the others. Certain areas of the forum should be just for registered members only.

that sounds alright i mean, normally i hate the 'have to log on ones' because you can't actually know what you're signing up for but if you could view some places that's be good. I'd recommend allowing about 2 rp boards so peple can get an idea of the rp standard. thats my opionon ;D i dont plan to ever hav my board set up lik that but its not a bad idea.

One of the forums I'm on is in that mode, but its for a reason. We've had trouble with people coming in and stealing copyrighted work, and impersonating several current members while on other websites. Once we put it in the 'members must log in' mode, the stealing stopped, and we were able to get a handle on what was happening. Since then, we've kind of relaxed the security situation, as the thief and admin came to a tentative agreement, but are still rather tight on the security.
As it is, though, we're still getting new members pretty regularly, and none of the members - to my knowledge - have complained about it. As time goes on, we're planning (I think) to relax the security even more.

I hate the you have to log in to see it... You do not know what you are getting into, nor do you have clue what it is about... I have only one Board I do that for, but that is because I was having bad things posting on the V.1 of that and had to make a v.2 to keep them from posting on it...
I want to know what I am signing up for

I don't like forums making guests log in at all. I personally think it's a bit rude. I'm an RPG person, and I'm an intermediate-advanced role player. I like sites that have a two or three hundred word post minimum. One thing that really makes me mad is when an RPG makes guests log in. I mean, how do I know the members aren't all beginners? I mean, there's nothing wrong with being a beginner role player, but I need forums that have more advanced, literate role players. I don't like short posts. How do I know what I'm getting into?
I'm the type of person who NEEDS to read the rules before joining a forum. I have to see if there's anything I disagree with. I also need to check the celebrity claims, to see I can use my favorite face claim. I mean, what's the point of it? People could just register an account and steal everything. I've read a lot of times about how a trusted member or even a devoted staff member will steal from a site. As much harm as guests can cause, some of those guests are your potential members, who would like to see the forum before they're forced to join it.
Besides, if you want to protect your posts, just leave everything except the rules and such boards, and maybe one in character board open- so guests can understand your forum, and see how everything is done. It all works out much better that way.

I haaaate forums with this feature....for me, I have to preview what it has to offer first, instead of going through the boring process of registering. And even if i do register, and i see its not what i want in a forum, i dont wanna make the admin sad by deleting my account So I usually dont join forums where you have to login. if admins want to hide content from members so bad, they can just make all boards not viewable by guests. =|

I don't like the guests must sign in or register feature. It defeats the purpose of even having guests. I like being able to check a forum to see if its really something I'd like to join and if they meet my level of literateness. If a forum is set for guests to sign in or register then I normally close it without even regretting it even if it was something I liked.
If an administrator wants to hide their stuff so badly then what's the point of having a forum in the first place? There are other ways to hide your information without making it so guests have to log in.

As I said on another thread, back in the old days we used to set up a variety of forums with a variety of accesses. We also had private boards and membership boards. I know the drawbacks to them all, pretty much, and figure that if someone wants to force guests to log in... then there is good cause for it. That doesn't mean I will join if I can't see enough to interest me.. but it is the right of that admin to have closed boards.

i think that guests should not have to log in because some people might not want to put in any information about themselves and if they don't want to login then they cant give their opinion or post anything

When I see a guest login, it makes me think they are sort of begging for members, and then everything just gets complicted with who the members are etc. If I don't like a site, I don't want to take time out to sign in. I just want to check it out and see.

Who would have guest? LMAO!The above post confuses me. I don't understand what it means. Could the author please clarify? I want to know what they mean by "who would have guest" and what their stance on this matter is. My stance is like most of the others I've read. Mostly, I only join boards when I've seen what it's like their. If guests must login, it sort of puts me off. There is only one board that I'm on where guests have to login, but the purpose is to keep me in touch with a friend who moved to Japan. We don't actually want any random person to waltz in and see what we're saying, no random person would want to see it unless they were some sort of evil stalker dude (mostly we just chat about how school's going, what nutty antics our little brothers are up to today, etc.), so there's no point in letting guests see it. For any other type of board, it's a nuisance and turns me off.

I do think that guests should be able view the forum. Of course, they should see what kind of boards the forum has. Yes, boards do draw people to join a forum. Well, let's see, if someone was curious enough with a forum and interested to join it, while the forum wants guests to have an account first then log in, and later on this person joined and then he figured out that the forum wasn't all that interesting as it looked. That's because he couldn't view what was in the forum before he joined the forum.
No offense to admins whose forums want guests to log in. For me, forums like that are like hiding something guests shouldn't see. Like when people want to request graphics in PBS or other design forums. While the rule says that forums with design section aren't suppose to request in those forums. So, to avoid staffs in the design forums to see if the requester's forum has design section, the admin in the forum then sets the forum to Guest Must Log In. So the staffs won't know about it.
Well, that's just my opinion.

I do not use guest's must log in as i like people to be able to see what you offer,as they cant steal your content as we have good amins here. And i think that when you have guests option on its hard to join as i like to see what i am signing up for.
