I used to have a site that I had members log in to veiw the board but now I just close all my boards to where they can only see certian things that I want visitors to see and not the other stuff I feel that if its open to much then people will steal things from your site which that happened to me the name of my first board and everything like that was taken and someone else said they came up with it first which seeing how old their board was it obviously wasnt their idea first And then I also have only certian board open cause I got tired of people visiting and treating my board like it was some sort of place where they can get their boards advertised there Its a roleplay board not an advertisement board

I think it isn't the best idea for a couple reasons. Well, guest need to search around your board to see if they really do want to join your board and if they just join it and then realize they don't want to, you will have lots of people in and out of your board like crazy. They need to at least read the rules and everything, right? Also, what if the members don't have time to log in and do all that crap, they just want to check in the forum really fast? I do that so many times. I check and see if my thread has been replied to or something like that. So...... I say no.

When our board was first started we went went with a totally private board, no guest viewing and guests must log in. The reason we went this way is that it's a hockey board, which would be prone to lots of trolls from other teams.
Much of our member ship came from word of mouth to people from other boards that we knew would add to the discussion while keeping the riff-raff out.
However, one can only invite so many people until they run of those they know. What has happened is that members either moved on, left due to disagreements or got tossed. With no one else knowing what the board is about, our active members have dropped to maybe a dozen and from those, very few want to post. Even one of our admins rarely shows up, maybe one every 2 weeks.
We had rejected allowing public viewing in order to keep the trolls out but now have had to open it up in the hopes of attracting members, or even old members back.
The one thing we haven't done is open the board to guest posting, as that wouldn't solve anything and would lead to allowing spam in.
I think if you have a board that's mainly for discussion, guests should at least be able to view. If it's more for creative ventures, then maybe that portion should be blocked off to only logged-in registered members and only any discussion areas pertaining to the theme of the site be allowed for public viewing.
But in no ways should any site be open to guest posting. If anyone wants to join in, they will. Anyone that wants to spam or troll can be controlled. If yours is a site with a large amount of active members, maybe promote people to admin/mod status to handle increased admissions and monitoring.

We used to be quite "open access" guests didnt need to log in but then after our troubles we locked and bolted the forum and most new members are directed there from anothre rpg forum and usually IM me to get access or are guests who really like roleplay. We intend to open up the forum again on its birthday which is next month and hopefully we wont have any more troubles.
But guests should be able to veiw before logging in its only fair and we'd like to see before we try

I have only just started to use the Guests Must Log-In feature on my forum.I dont regard this as a way of trying to draw attention to non member's to sign up.I started to do this to deter my members from viewing certain boards on my forum.Maybe i just get fed up with members visiting and not signing in while just remaining guests.

Eh, seeing a "guests must login" feature usually turns me off, as a visitor. I dislike not being able to see what a forum has to offer, what rules there are, and if some boards are shown to the public, how the members interact and what they're like. I'm not going to register, because if I don't like what I see, I'll end up deleting the account anyway and it'll be a waste of time to me.

I can see the use of 'Guests Must Log In' on a private forum where it is combined with Limited Registration and Account Activations but in other circumstances I disagree with it. Guests need to see what kind of things are discussed on a message board so that they know that it provides them with the kind of thing they are looking for. Not only that I'm sure most people look at the way the other members treat each other prior to joining and with forced registration that's just not possible.
With forced registration enabled, forums may lose out on a potential good member and end up with a lot of inactive users which is not a good thing on a community.
On my forums I've got a board where guests can post, this will allow possible members to ask questions prior to joining, then I've got some boards where guests can read all of the discussions but not take part and then there's a few boards that are members only. That seems to work quite well for us.

Our forum is currently set at Guest must log in but we are pondering if to let guests see parts of the forum. We were harassed at another forum so we did not want those few to be able to continue that. We are hoping that their need to do that was decreased enough to do that. Will have to figure out how to have only parts visable. If anyone wants to help please PM me. Good arguments have been made for both ways.

That is why ours is guests must log in, we had to much harassment from another forum. The way I took care of it was I put this disclaimer on the log in page in a text box: To all that wish to enter Inside this forum you are going to find the best Kid Rock fans and good friends. There is no fighting, no harassing, just adult intelligent conversations of our favorite rocker. You will also find concert reviews and current information on KR. So if you feel you want to be part of our community, A) click the new account and Welcome to the Party! or B) ARE YOU SCARED? seemed to have worked we have over 100 members and more joining everyday.

you could simply make it so that guests can only view certain parts of the board, I suggest rules, and section any joiner would at least need to see. Though by the way your all talking I think I migth be misunderstanding the question. In the end though you can just make it so you have to login to post, but definitely leave certain parts open for them to see if they even want to join.
and also Cam watchers, I can help put some as visible and others as not, it's pretty easy. it's inside modify boards section. let me see and give a quick tutorial of steps:
1. Anyone able to edit or modify boards, enter admin panel and click Modify Board.
2. inside modify boards click the ones you'de like to make viewable to all and hit continue.
3. inside the next page click the first section under boards settings that is labeled view boards.
4. Set that to everyone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
To make boards unseeable:
Repeat steps 1-2.
3. Click the view board selector and set it to Registered Members.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Rpeat appropriate steps for every board you would like.
To keep guests from posting simply go to modify board and turn everything under posting restrictions to Registered members only. This way they must join to post anything.

Our forum is not viewable to guests, but as it is for a special interest/hobby, guests can see all the board titles and understand what the content is likely to be.
We pm'd all our most active members and surveyed how they wanted the board to run, and overwhelmingly this was the preferred option. Someone only has to take a few minutes to open an account and if they don't like what they see, they don't need to revisit !
It offers our members some degree of privacy,if guests want to share other peoples photos, knowlegde, get up to date results etc it isn't much to ask that they join and become a registered member.
Our forum was born out of a similar one becoming for paid members only, so we had some aggravation when we first set up, so it helped in as much that trouble makers from elsewhere, had to join, some went on to become active members, others just wanted to see what we were doing and went back to their own site and the few troubles makers were soon weeded out. That said we wouldn't now go to guests can see everything, it wouldn't be right for us. We keep the introduction boards open for guests to view, so at least would be members can see we are a friendly bunch, and once joined we have no password protected areas.
Think this would depend entirely on the type of board you have.I can see how for some it would be a no no, but for a simple message board, among a community of people who mostly know or are friends of other members like ours,it is a very useful tool.
