That's only for fixed-height objects, though. CSS3 better come with the vertical-aligning ability.

you could also use a table with 100% height & width and make use of it's valign property though i#m not sure how that would work in practice as tables have limitations of their own. it was just a thought though.

Tables have always had vAlign. The obsession with div vAlign is that tables aren't standards-compliant iike divs are.
