Is this possible? It would be good to see if anyone was harassing a certain user or anything like that.

yes, but administrators should be able to view them at all times, private or not...if there was a harassment issue or something

It's against people's right to privacy. How would you like it if the people at AOL, Google, Yahoo, Earthlink, SBC, etc. read your emails.

yes, but administrators should be able to view them at all times, private or not...if there was a harassment issue or something No....they are still private messages....admins are not allowed to read them....if you have a harassment problem the best solution would be to have the member allow you to log in using their name and viewing that members PM's as if you were them.

The only way would be to use their password, but that's against the reg. agreement... The other way would be to be that member, but that's a lot less possible than it sounds. ;D
You can ask them to send you a screenshot, then contact the abusive member if you have an abuse complaint.

But the admin of a single ProBoard and a ProBoards staff member like Pat or Craig are completely different levels of authority here.

That's a good suggestion, Sy-ko - The screen shot one. I've never thought of that. Actually, I know of some sites who can read the messages you send. Not proboards; I am talking about a regular site which has messages as a feature, etc. Is the 'Admin not being able to read private messages' thing only for Proboards, or is it actually against the law? Captain Maniac EDIT: Nevermind the second paragraph, Cali answered it I think.

If someone claims that someone else sent them a harassing PM, and they want to prove it, they can always give you (the admin) their password and allow you to look at the PM yourself. It's just not something you can do without their permission.

If you are really worried about Harassment through PM's, why don't you use the Disable PM System Code?

lol, good point ProSax...But they probably want people to be able to use the pm's, they're just worried that something will happen. Also a good point, california, but I know that if something like this happened on my forum, the member probably wouldn't give me their password. It's unsafe on their part (though i am harmless ;D) and they would probably feel unsecure about it. This isn't my thread anyhow, and I am not going through this problem, so why am I making so much discussion about it? Oh well, i'm done.
