i want... - To be able to cut out images of people and things (make them transparent)
- To be able to create my own unique images and background out of scratch
- To be able to make transparent Icons, Buttons and such.
- To be able to digitally color pictured I have drawn on regular paper.
Got any recommendations for me? I'd really appreciate it.

To be honest, you probably can do all of those in Gimp.

Photoshop is my graphics program of choice. However, it's pretty expensive, so if you're looking for something cheap/free, then go for Gimp.

I've tried Gimp, actually. But every download I use never works. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8. Plus I'm not looking for something cheep. I'm interested in something great. like Adobe, but which kind of Adobe? D:

Acrobat and Flash are totally different programs. There's only one photoshop but different versions. Since you are new, I'd download one of the trials for now.

Just to add - for all of those things, I used to use Photoshop Elements 1.0. :3 Not recommending it, but as far as "what photoshop do I use", all photoshop versions have those capabilities. How they turn out, however, depends on your experience.

I have CS2 and barely use it. Quite easy to use when you know what you're doing!

I would go with CS1 for starters. CS2 and CS3 can be a pain in the butt for newbies. Plus CS1 should be at a reasonable price these days.

I've used gimp forever, and I actually prefer it to adobe photoshop. If you can correctly install it, I can teach you to do all of those things.

The easiest way is to just download the free trial. When I'm in the mood, I may download the CS5 trial just to see what it's like and possibly may upgrade. Just make sure you're in a graphics-making mood, otherwise you'll lose your precious trial over time.
