Anyone used this before for hosting static content? Am thinking of using it to host my new ProBoards Mod, considering it's Google, you would expect it to have fairly good uptime due to the resources they have. Have run some tests so far, seems pretty good, just wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on it? appengine.google.com

I looked at it when I was on your Proboards Mod alpha testing thing. Seems convenient, a little advanced for simple hosting :X

I would use it if I needed reliable hosting, without having to worry about logging in (like Ripway). Though, I don't have any need for that right now.

I use it to host the data/content for my Facebook Style Like/Dislike System. It does have great uptime and response time. Occasionally there is an error, but that's usually with the datastore system, not static content. I've had no issues with static content being down. The one problem I've noticed with static content is that if I let Google handle caching, it doesn't cache as long as it should. However, if I write my own software to handle static file caching, it uses CPU time and counts towards the free limit. As far as I can tell, letting Google handle caching doesn't seem to use much CPU time at all. Also keep in mind that the free accounts only get 1 GB of outgoing bandwidth. If you're using it solely for static files, this will probably be the limit you hit first, but every GB after that is only 12 cents, so it's really not that big a deal. Oh, and there's no FTP interface. You have to use their software and the appropriate files to get it to work. I can help out if you need it.

I don't like it, because it requires Python or Java. I'm not familiar with either. I wish they'd just offer a simple upload forum for the sole purpose of whoring their bandwidth. =|
