welll it would really depend on your codes ;p If you don't have a way of seperating your codes from the other skins. 1.
I've created up to 10 skins and still had the site work, so i'm not really sure. but anymore than 8 i found the forum really clogged up and was to load.

My understanding there isn't a limit. I've known some sites to have as many as 100...yes, you heard me right. lol Having a lot of skins will not slow down your site. It only loads the skin you are using.
And having specific coding for each skin shouldn't slow your site down by much at all (probably wouldn't even be noticed) as long as don't have conflicting coding for those skins, all the edits are done correctly and everything is organized as it should be.
