Question about cutting out text

I'm helping my friend with a "logo" and i've seen this done a whole bunch of times but I'm interested in making the text "Sol 100" to be absent from the black block. I can't describe it too well but I'm aiming to make it a black block with the name Sol 100 cut out of the block

I'm using photoshop and I would like to be able to do it there but I also have Illustrator (i'm just not experienced in it yet)

Dont quite understand you matey the logo "sol 100" is already cut out of the black.

So it's transparent underneath and will pick up any background colour, and not be white?

Do two layers, one with text the other as a black background. Click the text as a selection source then go to the black background layer and cut it.

Then as long as you save it as PNG which supports alpha transparancy, you'll be able to get this effect
