I've been trying to work on colorization for Classic Doctor Who icons. This are two of my latest tries(I think my 4th tried with actual photos) originaloriginalI also added more colring but just to the icons. *Sorry for the ugly watermarks, but I don't want anyone using them for now. But if anyone wants to see them without them just ask. Also the message is for lj so just reply here. *

What exactly did you color? It's easy to see the comparison if you share the originals

I think you may want to play around with it some more; I recently started colouring b&w photos, myself. Try playing with the blending options, the burn/dodge tools, and try using layer masks, if you don't already. :] Right now it seems a little flat, so it's a bit more obvious the pictures weren't originally in colour. This tutorial was really helpful, but of course, don't limit yourself to just what the tutorial says to do - use it as a base for the basic technique, then experiment until you get results you're happy with.
