I personally have not come across a thread referring to this but is it possible to implement a detection system for duplicate posts, maybe even threads?

Not sure exactly what you mean, but the new search system in v5 would allow you to find any duplicates quickly and efficiently.
What would you use a detection system for?
Edit: To expand this idea under the assumption you desire it to fight spam it wouldn't work for the two following reasons. First, an auto-detection system would use a lot of resources. That may or may not slow down your forum. It would certainly use server resources. Second a spammer could dodge this easily. We were spammed here on a support just lat week. The spammer threw random smileys at the end of their post. Each post was different as a result. If this happened in v5 I could have easily located all the other posts through similar content using the search system. But an auto detection system would have failed. Though the easiest way was to look at all the posts made by the member (in v4 or v5).

If you attempt to create the same exact thread twice it will not create the 2nd thread. Similarly, if you post the same thing twice it will only post once. You are, however, redirected to the thread/post that did exist that you posted the first time. So yes, we do have duplicate thread/post detection

Is this supposed to work already? v5.proboards.com/board/29/general-talk3 topics the exact same. If it is I will make a bug report, but I have a feeling you guys haven't set it in motion yet?

If you submitted the *exact* same data for each of those posts, then there is a bug. The feature was already coded

Well for the first one, I was in "live" mode and used the URL bbcode and entered the text + link. For the 2nd, I edited the post because I misread this post of yours, and thought it meant just the topic title. The third however, I copied and pasted and then posted.
So should I go make a bug report?

It checks the last post that you made for an exact match. Try creating a topic and creating the exact same topic again. Make sure there are zero differences between the two. It sounds like you didn't quite take that path.

I did the same for each topic this time, EXACTLY, and it created both topics: Create Thread. Title the thread "Testing Testing" and then in "visual" I pasted the link to this thread, and posted.
