Social Networking Platforms

Has anybody worked with / recommend any social networking platforms out there? I'm working on a project for work where I need to create a closed social network for our members, and there are a couple software packages (Dolphin from Boonex and Social Engine) that I've been looking at. I'm not overwhelmingly happy with either, and Social Engine is crazy slow on my server. I'm also not a wiz with...well, any real hardcore programming languages, so I wondered if anyone knew of a software package that's fairly easy to install on a server, and that they find works well.
