There should be joinable member groups, so that a member can be part of multiple member groups.
Such as on a board devoted to all sports, you could join the group for baseball and the group for basketball, and get access to different member privileges and sub-boards based on those groups.
With of course the admin option to set up groups which require staff approval to join.
Every other message board hosting service I've used has this feature, and it's the single biggest drawback to proboards because it significantly limits functionally in regard to member permissions.
My boards cater to very specific subcultures and social structures, and it would be nice to be able to easily grant access to sections of the board on an individual basis rather than setting up a different member group for every possible combination.
To use sports as a simple example again. It's a hassle to have a list of member groups that look like this:
baseball
basketball
football
baseball/basketball
baseball/football
basketball/football
basketball/football/baseball
I'd rather just have a section in every member's profile with radio buttons that can be toggled on and off.
