There has been lots of discussion over this.
If you are permanently banning someone then you don't need to give them a reason. They literally can no longer access your forum at all in any way. There is no place for a message to be displayed for them to read. A permanent ban is a serious thing and you should not continue communication with such a person. You don't need to tell a spammer they;re a spammer, etc.
If there is something you want to tell a person you can warn them using the warning system. You can send a PM through this system. If it's a temporary ban then we provide you the ability to send the person a PM which they can read upon their return. Same thing goes for disabling someone's account.
Essentially if the person is going to continue as a member in the future then you have many options to communicate with them. If they are such a threat that they require a permanent ban they should be owed no explanation, and we don't want to give them access to your forum just so they can read why they aren't allowed there anymore. A ban cuts all ties to your forum for security purposes.

So what you're saying is, with V5, permanently banned members will not even reach the forum? Will they just be presented with a blank screen? Not even a banned message? It's actually a completely blank white screen, not on your forum, and in plain black text centered right in the middle are the words You have been banned. We do not give them the opportunity to access the forum at all. This prevents them doing anything malicious (like spamming your shoutbox, etc).

Say you enter an ip into the ban section, would the ip be banned and not able to access the forum?

Just a Username or Global ID ban wouldn't take effect until they logged in. Meaning if you only ban by Username or Global Id they can still access the forum as guests. We obviously don't know who they are until they login. If you wanted to block them completely you would ban by IP. Ban TypesUsername - The person could still access the forum as a guest or login with another username. Global ID - The person could still access the forum as a guest. IP Address - No access at all.

I absolutely love you guys for this. I have a few banned members that creep on my forum, and now i have a definite way to stop them. THANKS!!!!!!

I have a question of my own for this; will we be able to alter the banned message, customize it, etc?

No, it simply states that they are banned.

Quick question.
Does the check for a ban take place before or after the check for "Too Many Connections"?

Quick question. Does the check for a ban take place before or after the check for "Too Many Connections"? Ban shows up after. If the person can't connect for some reason then we don't know who they are or if they're banned. Too many connections should be very rare, and even more so in v5. We have systems in place to prevent that from ever happening. And in cases where it does our staff are working on the system within seconds.

What about VPNs and proxies? What about rotating/dynamic IP addresses?

adam,
This is why you would ban their global account or username, to prevent access not only by the IP but from any account they create using the ProBoards global account.

now then this more of curious question on my part I know when you IP them its permanent they can't do anything. However there was that coding for "Individual ban messages" where the mod or any staff who as access to the headers can insert a message on why they were ban. Now could that code be a permanent add-on/request? this way its built into the Proboards code and not a separated code.......more simple way is instead of constantly adding a message in the header it will be built directly into the members profile and when you want to ban them for lets say a week it will say: You have been ban from using this site for the following reason:
trolling other user when was asked to stop
You have a one week ban or 800000 minutes remaining on the ban this the code I was talking about "sorry my math isn't the greatest but its an example

Please read all of my posts above. I went into detail on solutions to this request. If you want to notify them and tell them how long they have until a ban is removed then don't ban them, disable their account. A ban is a security wall to protect your forum from harm. We aren't allowing them a way to access your forum in any way. This includes receiving a message about their ban. It's a security issue. These people were doing harm to your forum in some way. They do not need to be told what malicious thing they were doing. They are aware of their actions. If it's something that is not as serious, and is potentially forgivable then disable their account. We're trying to educate members about the use of the ban system. It is a security wall and a final resort. If you are using it for punishment there are other ways to do that. Start with the warning system, then use the disable system. The ban system is for stopping attacks and removing bad members permanently.

I was thinking of a way to incorporated something like that into the Disable Profile feature this way once they realize that "hey they aren't joking" they usually calm down and behave. is it possible? or read the above post again edit: after thinking it over during the night if I can I would like to show you who taught me a little by little about the banning or in your terms Disabling accounts I learn a little bit by a staff off of proboards I'm sure you heard of them [AS] aka [Adult Swim] they showed me and told me disabling an account was how you said is banning them permanently in [AS] terms banning is similar towards the PB warning system only when you push your luck to far they ban you "like they did with me in that image >.>" thats why I was wondering instead of having to use the code that you have to manually type in a reason in the global header it can be apart of the actual software. is that more possible?
