Unlockable community, individual achievements

I think it would be a great idea to be able to introduce an achievement system on a community level and individual level, based on criteria aside from post count. For example on an individual level, most videos contributed, more than 10 artwork contributed, karma rating of above 50, etc. For community level, first 100, 500, 1000 total discussion topics, 5000 total posts etc. Add possibility of introducing hidden achievements.

For every achievement, user or entire community will be awarded/rewarded with some new feature/content.

I believe lots of gaming sites already have a system in place, for example the Blizzard pre-launch sites for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, and GameTrailers.com

Achievements are already a planned feature that will be integrated along with our badge system and the global network. However the achievements system will not be included at launch. Look for in in one of the first v5.x releases.

We already have a list of achievements and ideas for them. None of them will be based on things that cause SPAM or disruptions (ie. a certain post count). Many involve time, like how long you've been a member, etc. A portion of them are dedicated to teaching people how to use ProBoards. Through gamification we hope to help users learn more about the forums and how they work. You should feel rewarded for learning. There will also be many hidden achievements like you mentioned. I won't go into what those may be since, well, they're hidden.

Badges are an optional way to show flair in your user profile. You can purchase badges for yourself or gift them others. In the future badges will be unlocked by achievements as well. The rest of the badge system is secret for now. Expect a preview in the near future.
